Zeko Burgess Earns BFSA Sportsmanship Award
The Bermuda Friendly Societies Association [BFSA] will present the annual Cup Match Sportsmanship Award to Zeko Burgess of St. George’s Cricket Club.
A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Friendly Societies Association will proudly present the 22nd Annual Sportsmanship Award to Zeko Burgess of the St. George’s Cricket Club on Thursday, August 21st, at 6:00 PM at the Alexandrina Lodge Hall located at No. 75 Court Street in Hamilton.
“This annual award exists to honor not runs or wickets, but qualities such as character, composure, leadership, and respect.
“Zeko Burgess was selected following a recommendation from the Bermuda Umpires Association, whose officials observed his consistent display of sportsmanship throughout this year’s Classic. Observing his interaction with teammates, his calm demeanor under pressure, and his respect for the spirit of the game, Burgess stood out.
“This award was created not simply to uplift individuals, but to reaffirm something more profound, especially at a time when the public conversation around Cup Match has been clouded by negativity.
“That said, Cup Match has long been played against difficult backdrops, and its meaning lies not in avoiding those realities, but in rising above them. The game has consistently called on us to meet challenges with grace, discipline, and a commitment to something greater than ourselves.
“As an organization rooted in Purity, Friendship, Love, and Truth, we believe it is essential to reinforce and recognize the behaviors that strengthen our people and preserve our traditions. The exemplary sportsmanship that was displayed serves as a powerful reminder of the deeper meaning behind this celebration, not just as a game, but as a reflection of the values that first brought our communities together.
“This year’s event will also feature Sean Tucker, known as the Voice of Summer, as the Awards Speaker, and Cup Match Legend, Jeff Richardson as the Presenter.
“We invite the public to join us on Thursday, August 21st, at 6:00 PM at the Alexandrina Lodge Hall located at No. 75 Court Street in Hamilton, in honoring Mr. Zeko Burgess and in celebrating what truly makes Cup Match special.”
