Nikki Bascome On Sparring Session Success

Bermuda boxer Nikki Bascome has hailed the success of the open sparring session at the Fresh & Hungry Boxing Club in Warwick in response to rising gun violence and anti-social behaviour on the island.
The event, held on Saturday [September 27], featured several exhibition bouts and welcomed participants of all experience levels.
Fighters from across the island took part, including representatives from Controversy Gym, Aries Sports Centre, and the Bermuda Sanshou Association.
Bascome, who has long credited boxing with steering him away from trouble in his youth, said the initiative was aimed at offering a positive outlet for young people.
“It was a great event – the matchmaking was on point,” Bascome, who has won 13 of his 15 professional bouts, told Bernews.
“We had some great bouts and everyone gave it their all.”
The 34-year-old expressed gratitude to all involved, adding: “I’d like to thank all the fighters, coaches, volunteers, and sponsors – especially my team – for helping to put this together.”
The positive feedback, he added, has already sparked calls for future events.
“Many participants said they can’t wait for the next one,” he said.
“This will help the community in positive ways, especially those youngsters who need a constructive outlet.
“It’s also a great opportunity for aspiring boxers to improve their skills and take their craft to the next level.”
The event was supported by a host of local sponsors, including Xtreme Sports, Arnold’s Supermarket, Elite Fitness, Annual Auto Care, Pitt & Company, and Bermuda General Agency.
