Some of Bermuda’s top athletes gathered for a celebratory brunch honouring the winning youth collectors of the Bermuda Police Service and Hamilton Princess Legends & Trading Card Series.

The Bermuda Police Service and Hamilton Princess & Beach Club released 44 sports cards – 11 Legends and 33 Superstars – inspired by trading cards from the 1980s.

The collection features iconic figures such as cricket legend Clarence Parfitt, track and field star Clarence “Nicky” Saunders, footballer and cricketer Randy Horton, triathlete Erica Hawley, boxer Nikki Bascome, netball player Dominique Richardson, and swimmer Emma Harvey and many more.

The Hamilton Princess & Beach Club hosted a special brunch on Saturday [Septemeber 27] for the grand prize winners of the BPS x Hamilton Princess Sports Superstars Card Series.

A draw selected ten youngsters from among the 33 who successfully collected all 44 cards.

Each winner, accompanied by a parent, attended the brunch and had the opportunity to meet the Legends and Superstars featured in their collections – a memorable experience celebrating both Bermuda’s athletic talent and the next generation of sports enthusiasts.

Among the “Legends and Superstars” who attended was archer Bernard Wade III.

“It’s been an honour to represent the sport of archery and to inspire the next generation of archers,” he told Bernews.

Jay Donawa, a Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby winner, added: “Throughout my career, I competed in cross-country, track and road running.

“It’s an honour and a pleasure to be selected as part of this Legends Series. I’m thankful and glad to be here with some of the sporting legends.”

Olympic swimmer Jenny Smatt echoed their sentiments: “I’d like to thank the Hamilton Princess and the Bermuda Police Service for facilitating the Legends and Superstars cards.

“Some of you may recall, I was part of [the series] in the Eighties – it’s lovely to see the tradition and effort continue to give visibility to the athletes who are on the world stage or who have been on the world stage.

“It’s wonderful to see so many people here who are interested in sport and curious to learn about the journeys of our sports stars.”

Megan Troake, representing the Bermuda Hockey Federation, said: “It’s been wonderful to meet so many athletes from different sports and get to know the student-athletes across the island.”

Boxer Nikki Bascome, who has won 13 of his 15 professional bouts, said: “It’s an honour to be here and to have been chosen [for the series].

“I take a lot of pride in being a positive role model in the community. I plan to lead by example as much as I can and help the younger generation achieve success in whatever they put their minds to.”

Randy Horton, who played for the New York Cosmos in the North American Soccer League, said: “This is a programme that’s very positive.

“It gives our young people the opportunity to find out about people who came before them and participated in sports.”

Terry-Lynn Paynter, a member of the Bermuda Police Service who competed in track and field, softball, cricket, and football, said: “Sports helped ground me and give me a good life.

“It’s allowed me to travel the world, and I hope more kids get involved and enjoy their journey.”

I love this concept . So may positives to get from this. They taught, history, , the rewards of working hard, exposure to different sport, trade and so much more. I hope they keep it going.

Not sure if these residents were included in the first run, but if not and if the committee are looking for others to consider, it would be nice to see Ray Swan (Long Distance runner), Hon Jim Woolridge (The Voice of Summer), Brian Morris, (golf / cricket / snooker), Peter Bromby / Lee White (Sailing), Brian Wellman (Track & Field), Shaun Goater (Football) …sooooooo many more worthy of consideration. Please keep this going,
