[Updated] The Ministry of Public Works and Environment has confirmed that Harbour Road in Paget has reopened to all traffic following emergency BELCO repair works.

A Government spokesperson said, “The Ministry of Public Works and Environment advises the motoring public that Harbour Road in Paget, which was closed yesterday to facilitate emergency BELCO repair works, has now reopened to all traffic.

“The closure, put in place on Thursday, 4 September, was required to allow crews to carry out urgent utility pole repairs following an accident. Those works have been completed, and normal traffic flow has been restored.

“Motorists and commuters travelling into the City of Hamilton this morning may once again use Harbour Road as part of their journey.”

Update 2.01pm: A BELCO spokesperson said, “BELCO announces that Harbour Road in the area of Lover’s Lane Paget was fully reopened to traffic as of 1:30am today following the completion of emergency utility pole replacement work.

“The road closure was necessitated by a motor vehicle accident that occurred shortly before midnight on September 3rd, which resulted in a BELCO utility pole being snapped in half, creating significant safety hazards to the public and requiring the closure of a section of Harbour Road in Paget between Lover’s Lane and Chapel Road.”

BELCO Managing Director Shelly Leman said, “Our crews worked around the clock to restore both power and road access to commuters. This was a complex emergency response that required immediate action to ensure public safety while restoring essential services.”

The spokesperson said, “BELCO crews completed their restoration work by approximately 11:30pm on September 4th, installing a new utility pole and transferring conductors to restore power to all affected customers. The road remained closed until 1:30am to allow the other utilities to complete their infrastructure repairs and cable transfers safely.

“The emergency response required a crew of 6-12 persons working for approximately 17 hours and necessitated the deployment of specialised equipment and materials. To expedite the restoration and minimise disruption to residents and commuters, BELCO diverted crews from scheduled customer and maintenance activities.

“We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the BELCO crew members who demonstrated exceptional dedication working in challenging conditions to restore this critical infrastructure.

“We also thank the residents and motorists for their patience and cooperation with traffic diversions during this extended repair period. We recognise the significant inconvenience this closure caused, particularly during rush hour traffic.

“BELCO will work collaboratively with relevant authorities to ensure appropriate accountability regarding this incident and to pursue fair compensation for the emergency response costs and resources deployed.

“Power has been fully restored to all affected customers, normal traffic flow has resumed on Harbour Road, and our crews have returned to their regular operational and maintenance schedule to continue improving Bermuda’s electrical infrastructure.”

  1. Pure Madness!!! says:

I don’t live in the west but, THANK YOU BELCO!!!

  2. sage says:

Now belco is “mulling” compensation by the alleged drunk for the repairs? Drunk drivers need to be held accountable not have dui charges left on file on sentencing to minimize consequences like the intermittent sentence one got recently.
