Woollins And Sowerby Win Word Of Life Race
Philip Woollins and Lucy Sowerby claimed the men’s and women’s titles in the Word of Life Bermuda 5K Run today [October 12].
The race, organised by Sean Trott, gave competitors a five-minute head start before the Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby champion set off in pursuit of them.
Word of Life, which is close to Trott’s heart, is a Christian mission organisation committed to helping youngsters and runs summer camps for 11 to 17-year-olds on Grace Island in the Great Sound.
Woollins, who competed with Trott at the International Island Games in Orkney, Scotland, last summer, handled the wet and windy conditions well, clocking a winning time of 18min 22sec.
He was followed by Nathaniel Maurice in 18:49 and Miles Smith in 18:57.
Sowerby was the first female to cross the line in eighth place overall in 22:26.
Akilah Reid was the second female finisher, placing sixteenth overall in 25:39, while Melissa Gilmar rounded out the top three, coming 22nd overall in 29:32.
Trott finished ninth in 22:29 [17:29 without the five-minute delay].
The race, which started and finished at Astwood Park, also included a one-mile kids’ race for those 12 and under.
The top three finishers were Sasha Maringi [7:16], Abigail Maringi [9:01] and Xiana Trott [9:54].
Floyd Ming [42:49], Angie Berry [42:56] and Gladwina Omara [43:37] were the top three walkers.
