At a recent public meeting, a person stated that they travelled to 500 Caribbean Islands and each of the islands had persons from other islands sleeping in the streets creating crime. Additionally, the respective governments could not deport these persons.
All of the above with not one shred of evidence to back his claim. What was not surprising, was the claps from the audience.
If the Caribbean was such a bad place, I am not sure why major Bermudian businesses such as; BermudAir, Butterfield Bank, Colonial [CG] and Conyers would invest so much money into regions like this. Would they not be better off investing in places like Europe? After all there is seemingly no poverty or crime there correct?
I mean if it is really that bad in those 500 islands why is tourism so high? Why would there be so much real estate development going on? Why would BermudAir be ordering more jets to fly to the Caribbean?
Regression not progression However, let us cut through the chase.
It is one thing if persons are simply seeking more answers for their own knowledge or just outright against CARICOM. That is their choice.
However, it is something completely different when persons in a public meeting are blatantly making up lies in order to denigrate an entire culture. The very same culture from which a large proportion of Bermudians of all complexions have their origins.
Another statement was along the lines of “We are under a very serious threat.” and “We are different from them.”. I could be mistaken in thinking that the words diversity and inclusion were more than buzzwords. I truly think we are in some time machine back to the 1950s-60s when one sector of Bermuda used to openly verbally say all manner of negativity about persons of colour or Caribbean heritage.
Next week this time we will be celebrating Emancipation Day and Mary Prince Day. If in the year 2026 persons can boldly sit in a public meeting and proudly say all sorts of discriminatory things about one sector of Bermuda, then we as a society, truly have not moved far from 1834.

The comments made at that meeting were offensive and made the viewers feel like we were sitting in Mississippi 1950. And when you looked at the composition of the meeting it was even more reinforced.
What was even more noticeable was that the moderators and hosts didn’t speak in correction of or even address these types of comments. They just enabled the comments to rile the audience up even more.
Just be thankful that you were not threatened and ordered out by “security”.
That meeting was a political disaster. It failed to provide a strong representation of Bermuda. The crowd consisted of white voters. They really need to stop saying the party is diverse.

It’s very telling that you, along with Famous, are outraged by a nonsensical comment made by some random person in a public meeting, yet you fail to call out the blatant falsehoods Famous and the other cronies alongside him have propagandised (whether outright or by omissions of information) to the public regarding CARICOM.
The fact of the matter is that the government has not done any real due diligence in determining verifiable, substantiated benefits and drawbacks that full CARICOM membership has for Bermuda specifically. And no, “we can improve food security by exploring other trade partnerships” is not a sufficient answer. Just one example of the complete lack of depth of the information contained in the green paper.
Our government and their cheerleaders seem to be more concerned about CARICOM affairs than Bermuda’s own challenges, apparently.
What is this racism theme being posted using the USA as an example? Which US political party ran Mississippi in 1950?
You’re a fine one to talk about ‘shreds of evidence to back up claims’ when your party still hasn’t given a single real and tangible reason what the benefits of joining this organization will result in for us .
It was a pathetic display MP Famous, for the whole of Bermuda to see..Thank goodness that these are a minority.
The meeting resembled a clan gathering. Only one part of Bermuda was truly present. Why did the OBA restrict the media from presenting live footage in the same manner as the PLP does to the public?
What is the reason behind their continuous efforts to conceal the identities of their supporters?
A clan (Klan) gathering? I had no idea that the USA’s Democratic Party, which founded the KKK, was in Bermuda. How did I miss that?
Are you frustrated that the 150 packed audience was composed solely of white supporters of the oba? It appears that your anger is directed more towards the revelation of the truth regarding the opposition party!
