Vieira & Rodrigues Help Eckerd Finish 10th
Bermudian sailors Jordan Vieira and Paul Rodrigues Jr. contributed to Eckerd College’s 10th-place finish at the Nevins Trophy regatta in New York. The two-day event was shortened to one day of competition after a Nor’easter forced the cancellation of all racing on the second day.
The opening day at the US Naval Academy Sailing Center was marked by inconsistent weather. Eckerd started strong, ranking third overall after three races in Division A and two in Division B. Racing was later halted due to fluctuating wind speeds, which ranged from 3 to 12 knots.
After six completed races in each division, Eckerd was ranked 10th out of 17 teams with 107 points. Organizers canceled all subsequent racing due to a forecast of 40-60 knot wind gusts from the approaching Nor’easter.
Vieira, sailing with Tia Soultankakis in Division A, finished 10th overall with 59 points. The pair had two top-five finishes, with their best result being a fourth-place finish in race two.
In Division B, Rodrigues Jr. and Avery Guck placed seventh with 48 points. They secured top-five results in both the second and final races of the regatta.
Eckerd’s combined performance resulted in a 10th-place finish, with all sailors being sent home early for safety.
