BCA Launch Chess Education Scholarship

January 18, 2026 | 0 Comments

The Bermuda Chess Association [BCA] has unveiled its 2026 Scholarship, valued at $10,000 and supported by the XL Foundation.

A spokesperson said, “This unique award is tailored for high school graduates embarking on their tertiary education journey in fall 2026, offering an exceptional opportunity to pursue an Associate in Arts [Business Administration] or Associate of Science [Actuarial Science] at Bermuda College. Remarkably, the scholarship also welcomes students who are relatively new to chess that can show a strong aptitude for learning chess and applying its principles.

FIDE’s Year of Chess in Education Sets the Stage

“This scholarship launch coincides with FIDE’s global ‘Year of Chess in Education,’ a campaign celebrating the role of chess in cultivating critical skills among youth worldwide. The BCA’s initiative aligns perfectly with this international movement, reinforcing Bermuda’s commitment to harnessing chess as a tool for educational enrichment and personal growth.

Bermuda’s Recent Chess Milestones

“The past year has been transformative for chess in Bermuda. The BCA’s Chess in Education initiative saw the successful Preparation of Teachers seminar in March 2025, empowering educators to introduce chess into classrooms. Following this, three schools were accredited as official chess schools, marking a significant leap forward. The Gift of Chess Charity’s donation of 800 boards and a EUR10,000 grant from the FIDE Planning & Development Committee have further bolstered resources, ensuring that chess is accessible to students island-wide.

Scholarship Overview: Value and Study Paths

“The BCA Scholarship offers up to $10,000 towards tuition, covering as many as 64 credits in either the Associate in Arts [Business Administration] or Associate of Science [Actuarial Science] programs at Bermuda College. This investment is designed to equip future leaders with both academic credentials and the intellectual tools that chess imparts.

Who Should Apply?

“Unlike traditional chess scholarships, the BCA’s award does not require applicants to be seasoned chess players. Instead, it seeks students who demonstrate a keen ability to grasp chess concepts quickly, a passion for learning, and the potential to lead and inspire others at school. The scholarship values critical thinking, strategic decision-making, and leadership—skills that are as vital in international business as they are across all walks of life.

Application Criteria: Aptitude, Leadership, and Initiative

“Limited prior chess experience required. Applicants should show an aptitude for learning chess, demonstrated over at least a 3-month period, and an eagerness to develop new skills.

“Leadership in promoting chess at school. Candidates should demonstrate initiative in encouraging peers to engage with chess, whether through clubs, events, or other creative channels.

“Academic performance is not a requirement. The focus is on potential, drive, and the ability to think strategically and act as a positive role model.

Why Chess? Building Skills for International Business and Beyond

“Chess is much more than a game—it’s a training ground for the mind. Through chess, students develop critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and sound decision-making. These skills are invaluable in the world of international business, where strategic planning, adaptability, and leadership are keys to success. The BCA Scholarship aims to nurture these qualities in Bermuda’s next generation of professionals and innovators.
