Junior Footballers Impress In San Diego
Four IDA-Bermuda Academy footballers represented Surf Select teams at the recent Surf Nation Champions League in San Diego.
The Surf Nation Champions League brings together under-14 teams across the Surf Nation to an ID event used to scout and identify players for an invite to join Surf Select national team rosters.
Vashon Martin, Xavier Hidalgo, Cairo Burgess joined New England Surf Select North East, with Devi Samuels playing for Ottawa City.
Martin, Hidalgo and Burgess helped their team capture the boys’ under-14 championship in the Bronze flight.
Samuels joined Ottawa City in the girls’ under-14 Silver division, helping them to finish second place.
The Surf Select programme is a national identification programme for players aged under-9 to under-17.
Through a series of regional and national events, players are selected to represent Surf Select and compete at domestic and international competitions.
There are 56 clubs in the Surf Nation, which is a network spread across the United States, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and Canada.
Warwick Football Academy have a partnership with International Development Academy, an affiliate of the Surf Soccer Clubs programmes.
It provides an opportunity for players from Bermuda to join Surf club and regional teams as guest players in events, as well as represent IDA-Bermuda select teams, led by Richard Todd, in events such as the Super Cup Northern Ireland.
The 2014 boys’ and girls’ National Surf Select teams will compete in the Surf Cup International Salou in Spain and the Target USA Cup in Minnesota later this year.
