Bermuda Tennis Team Secure Group II Status
Bermuda defeated Georgia 3-2 in a Davis Cup World Group II play-off at the Herodotou Tennis Academy in Cyprus yesterday [February 7].
In a tie that spanned two days, the 81st-ranked Bermuda team showed their mettle by beating a nation ranked 30 places above them.
Daniel Phillips returned to the court yesterday alongside Trey Mallory for a doubles match.
They faced Georgian pair Saba Purtseladze and Aleksandre Bakshi, securing a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 victory.
The win gave Bermuda a 2-1 lead.
Phillips faced Purtseladze for the second time in the day in a singles match, losing 6-4, 6-4, setting the stage for a winner-takes-all decider.
Wayne Montgomery met a fresh Zura Tkemaladze in a singles match, which finished 6-2, 4-7, 3-6 in favour of the Bermuda player as Bermuda secured their Group II status.
