Red Cross Expands Hospital Bed Service
The Bermuda Red Cross has expanded its Medical Equipment Rental Service to include hospital beds.
A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Red Cross extends its sincere gratitude to the generous donors whose support has strengthened our Equipment Rental Service and helped us better serve individuals and families across the island.
“Through our work in the community, we identified a specific and growing need in Bermuda to support families caring for loved ones at home—whether they are recovering from illness or surgery, or are part of our aging population who require additional support.

“Many families bringing loved ones home from the hospital need a fully functional hospital bed, and we aim to ease the financial burden of purchasing a brand-new bed. In response, over the past eight months, we have expanded our Medical Equipment Rental Service to include hospital beds. We want to ensure that families can access safe, reliable hospital beds for comfort, care, and independence at home.”
“This service exists because of the generosity and commitment of our donors and community partners,” said Ann Spencer-Arscott, Executive Director of Bermuda Red Cross. “Providing us with the funds to purchase hospital beds, they are helping families care for loved ones at home with comfort, dignity, and peace of mind. We are deeply grateful to End-to-End, Conduit Re, Lighthouse Medical, and to the individuals and families who donated beds from their own homes. Their support ensures that when a family needs help the most, Bermuda Red Cross can be there.”
A spokesperson added, “Thanks to financial contributions from End-to-End and Conduit Re, we have been able to purchase a number of new hospital beds along with other essential medical equipment, including wheelchairs, commodes, walkers, and shower chairs. These funds have also enabled us to implement a new inventory and rental management system, upgrading technology, improving efficiency and ensuring equipment is available when it is needed most.”

For the last 6 years, the only way to get a hospital bed was to purchase or borrow from a friend no longer using and this came at considerable cost. This grant was made with the hope of restoring comfort, dignity, and peace of mind for individuals recovering or receiving care, and of easing the burden on loved ones supporting them. It is a privilege to contribute to a solution that will have such an immediate and lasting impact in the community.”
A spokesperson added, “We are also supported by Lighthouse Medical, who provide an exceptional discount on all medical equipment purchased through them, including new hospital beds. In addition, their team assists with the delivery, installation, and return collection of hospital beds, ensuring a high standard of service, safety, and functionality for every rental.
We Are In Need Of Donated Beds:
“In addition to purchasing new beds, we are deeply grateful to the eight individuals and families who have generously donated hospital beds from their own homes. These personal donations make a meaningful difference, allowing us to assist families at a critical moment and provide comfort, dignity, and care to those recovering at home.
“While the initial hospital beds have made a significant impact in our community, demand for hospital beds remains high. We welcome donations of fully electric hospital beds in good working condition, as each donated bed helps another family care for a loved one at home safely and affordably.
“Bermuda Red Cross encourages anyone in need of a hospital bed for short- or long-term use to consider renting one through our Equipment Rental Service. Renting through us is an affordable and practical alternative to purchasing a new bed and directly supports our humanitarian work in the community.
Volunteers Needed
“To support this vital service, we are seeking volunteers to assist with equipment reservations, check-outs, and returns. Volunteers are asked to commit to a 2 to 4 hour shift, Monday through Friday, making it an easy and rewarding way to give back.

“Available items include self-propelled and transporter wheelchairs, walkers or all types and rollators, crutches and canes , shower chairs and tub transfer benches, raised toilet seats and commodes, support lifts. In addition to medical equipment we also rent children’s equipment including car seats, cribs, pack & plays and highchairs.
