Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited [BELCO] held its first-ever Lineman Rodeo on March 23, celebrating the skills, safety, and expertise of its lineworkers.
A spokesperson said, “Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited [BELCO] on Monday, March 23rd held its inaugural Lineman Rodeo for competing BELCO lineworkers. Held at the BELCO Transmission & Distribution training ground, this event recognises the profession of line work and demonstrates the aspects of safety, skills, and education of lineworkers.
“A total of 6 BELCO overhead lineworker apprentices participated in the Rodeo with the three winners being E’Treu Adonai, Jacari Renfroe, and Jalani Richardson. The winners from the Lineman Rodeo will represent BELCO and Bermuda at the 2026 CARILEC Lineworkers Rodeo, Symposium and Field Safety Training being held in Dominica from April 24 – April 26 in the apprentice category.
“The Caribbean Electric Utility Services Corporation [CARILEC] is a non-profit trade association serving electric utility companies and energy sector stakeholders across the Caribbean. The CARILEC Lineworkers Rodeo is one of the most important technical and cultural events in the Caribbean energy sector. It is not merely a competition, but a regional exercise demonstrating regional capabilities wrapped in a high-performance sporting format. This year, approximately 150 lineworkers from 33 Caribbean utility companies will compete in Dominica, making it a premier showcase of excellence across the region’s electricity industry.
“Several events were held including:
“1. The Hurt Man Rescue: Highlighting the proper rescue technique for lowering an injured worker to the ground.
“2. The Pole Speed Climb: Designed to showcase the lineworkers’ speed and agility as they climb and descend a pole.
“3. The Single Phase Equipotential Ground event: This demonstrates the proper installation of grounds on a single-phase system.
“4. The HV Fuse Link Replacement: This demonstrates the proper replacement of an HV fuse from the ground.”
BELCO Managing Director, Shelly Leman said: “Many years ago, going back to the 1940s, BELCO lineworkers put on a demonstration at the Annual Agricultural Exhibition of their skills, safety procedures and knowledge. We are pleased to have revived this tradition and had a highly competitive and entertaining Lineman Rodeo that demonstrated the skills our lineworkers use in their daily work as well as the success of our apprenticeship programme. Congratulations to our winners, E’Treu, Jacari and Jalani. Our entire team will be supporting them as they compete at the 2026 CARILEC Lineworkers Rodeo, Symposium and Field Safety Training in Dominica next month.”
