MP Dwayne Robinson On Road Safety & Moere
“I welcome and support the changes to the Project Ride programme passed in Parliament but there is much more to do regarding penalties and education to properly address our increasingly pressing road safety issue,” Shadow Tourism and Transport Minister Dwayne Robinson said.
Mr Robinson said, “In October I raised the need for an updated Road Safety Plan and other solutions to be implemented.
“I then brought questions to the House in November with the hope of obtaining a time frame from the Minister of Transport regarding when we would see some comprehensive action tackling our road safety problems.
“I was given no definitive date, just April 2026, followed up by a Transport press conference with further commitment from the Minister that the Government would consider solutions put forth by the Opposition and community.
“Suggestions included stiffer penalties for driving under the influence, speeding, and reckless riding/driving, along with the implementation of a road safety curriculum spanning from primary school to high school and e-bike legislation.
“Since then I commend the Bermuda Road Safety Council for their advertising campaign and presence in our schools. However the Progressive Labour Party continues to drag its feet on its responsibility which is policy and legislation to combat this critical issue.
“I welcome and support the changes to the Project Ride programme passed in Parliament but there is much more to do regarding penalties and education to properly address our increasingly pressing road safety issue.
“I understand that many of these issues come down to poor individual choices and it isn’t all on the Government to solve this crisis. However, with four road fatalities already this year, as elected officials, we must do our part and address reckless behaviour on our roads, including cross ministry collaboration to ensure our roads are properly maintained.
“I call on the Minister to provide a concrete date for our updated National Road Safety Plan and a legislative agenda to address Road Safety in Bermuda.”
