OBA’s Ben Smith On AI, Jobs, Economy & More

“The Government has failed to prepare for the potential impact of Artificial Intelligence’s impact on Bermudian jobs,” Opposition Leader Ben Smith has said.

He said, “On the House Floor I asked the Honourable Premier whether the Government has completed, commissioned, or scheduled a Bermuda-specific assessment of how artificial intelligence may affect the Bermudian labour market, including administrative, clerical, financial, insurance, professional and public-service roles, and future demand for skills, hiring and workforce retraining.

“He conceded that no plan yet exists to ensure Bermudians have the skills necessary to compete and succeed in an AI-driven economy. Artificial intelligence is not a future issue. It is a present reality that is already reshaping industries, workplaces, and economies around the world, including here in Bermuda.

“Bermuda’s economy depends heavily on professional services, international business, and administrative roles. These are jobs global experts believe will be significantly impacted by AI over the coming decade.”

Mr Smith adding: “The vital question is whether Bermuda is actively preparing for the present and future impact of AI, or will it simply be reacting to these changes.

“Our young people, workers, and employers should be concerned that the PLP Government has failed completely to prepare for the potential impact of artificial intelligence on Bermudian jobs.

“The Premier’s response to my questions reveals the PLP government has yet to prepare for changes already present and expanding very quickly. Working to ensure that Bermuda is ready for the impact of AI should be a national priority, not an afterthought.”
