PrivCom Releases Inaugural Annual Report
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner [PrivCom] releases its inaugural Annual Report, covering the respective reporting period of 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026.
Safeguarding Bermuda
A spokesperson said, “Centred on the theme ‘Safeguarding Bermuda’, the Annual Report publishes key data on the total number of filings with PrivCom during the reporting period, inclusive of the total number of written requests submitted by individuals, notifications of breaches of security submitted by organisations and general enquiries received. The case management processes adopted under the leadership of former Privacy Commissioner Alexander White are also summarised in the report to provide greater transparency in connection with the internal practices of the public authority.
“Apart from publishing data on community engagement with the rights regime, the Annual Report serves as an important record for Bermuda in two respects: The report chronicles the public authority’s transition from pre-implementation preparedness activities to more substantive regulatory enforcement, following the Personal Information Protection Act 2016 [PIPA] coming fully in force on 1 January 2025. The Annual Report further documents the transition of leadership during this critical period and reflects upon the legacy of Commissioner White, Bermuda’s first Privacy Commissioner, who served Bermuda from 20 January 2020 until 30 September 2025. The report then commemorates the appointment of Commissioner Gretchen Tucker by His Excellency the Governor Andrew Murdoch CMG near the end of the respective reporting period on 2 March 2026. Commissioner Tucker is the first Bermudian and first woman to hold the appointment.
“The Annual Report, therefore, marks a series of significant milestones in Bermuda’s historical advancement of data protection rights and leadership appointments in connection with the same. It further serves as a testament to the hard work of the public officers of PrivCom who continued to advance the statutory mandate established by PIPA, driven by their passion for the rights regime during a period of heightened uncertainty and increased public expectations.”
