Lehigh University Golf Team member Sienna Mosquera fired a creditable six-over-par 78 in the first round of the Connecticut Women’s Open at the Tumble Brook Golf Club in Bloomfield, Connecticut.

The Bermuda golfer finds herself in 21st position after the opening round, sitting six strokes behind the leaders at even par.

On a day that featured sun and mild breezes, only two players matched par to tie for first place at 72 [even par]: Yvette O’Brien [a] from Greenwich Country Club, Connecticut, and Dixon Hill [a] from Waite Hill, Ohio. They are followed closely by four players at 73 [+1]: Samantha Morrell of West Warwick, Rhode Island; Maisie Filler of Hartford Golf Club, Connecticut; Haile Batona of Rutland, Vermont; and Ellen Ceresko of Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Mosquera’s round consisted of 13 pars [with 11 greens in regulation]. Her driving and approach shots were solid, and her putting was outstanding as she mastered the pace of the greens and maintained a patient approach.

On hand caddying for Mosquera was her childhood golf coach Kim Swan who was beaming with pride at her opening round.

Mr Swan shared, “Sienna played a smart game of golf on a demanding golf course and I was most proud of the way she handled herself today.

“The pin placements were extremely challenging designed to punish an aggressive putt that missed the hole but Sienna was equal to the challenge. She hit 11 out of 18 greens in regulation – 61% greens in regulation is commendable –  followed up by a smart display of two putting by mastering the green speed to convert into pars.”
