Bermuda Mourns The Death Of Sir John Swan

[Updating] Bermuda is tonight mourning the death of Sir John Swan, the island’s longest serving Premier.

Premier David Burt said, “Sir John dominated Bermuda’s politics for a generation and for over a decade served as Premier of Bermuda. His tenure was historic and those of us who have followed him in this office still feel the shadow of his larger-than-life presence.”

Premier Burt continued, “Our politics often saw us on opposing sides, but we were united in a love of this Island, and her people. Sir John’s “common touch” remains a hallmark of his life and legacy. Whether in the White House or at Cup Match, he was the same man…true to his beliefs and ideals and always ready to greet people with his characteristic warmth. He certainly ‘walked with kings’ but never lost the common touch.

“On behalf of the Government and People of Bermuda I express our heartfelt prayers for the comfort of his children and his family. The legacy of this patriarch is a story of humble beginnings, dogged determination, business and political skill and success, founded in a genuine heart for service.”

The Cabinet Office confirmed that flags on Government buildings will be flown at half mast starting Friday, 5th June.

His official biography said, “Sir John Swan was a real estate developer, philanthropist, and the longest-serving Premier of Bermuda. He was widely respected for his keen political and business insight, matched by his humility and gentlemanly demeanour. As a child, Sir John was visually impaired and had dyslexia. His parents instilled in him the importance of discipline and sacrifice, which he embraced fully. He learned to overcome obstacles through determination and a belief in his ability to succeed, principles that have guided his life’s work.

“In 1962, he founded the John W. Swan Agency, a real estate development and savings and loan company offering services in architecture, construction, land development, rentals, and property management. Between 1968 and 1978, the company developed 40% of Bermuda’s residential homes. His mission was to help ordinary Bermudians achieve home ownership and provide them with the financial tools to do so. The company also employed over 20 young Bermudian contractors, many of whom went on to launch successful businesses of their own. The firm celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012.

“Sir John helped modernize the City of Hamilton through numerous building projects, including Bermuda’s first condominium complex and the island’s first 10-storey development at 141 Front Street, an environmentally sustainable and energy-efficient landmark.

“Before entering politics, he played a key role in national development as a founding member of the Bermuda Monetary Authority, a Director of the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce, and a Director of the Bermuda Employers Council.

“He was elected to Parliament in 1972 and simultaneously became Chairman of the Bermuda Hospitals Board. Over his 25-year political career, he held several important Cabinet posts, including Minister of Marine and Air Services, and Minister of Immigration and Labour, where he introduced progressive policies that supported Bermuda’s economic and social growth. In 1982, Sir John became Premier of Bermuda, a position he held for 13½ years until 1995.

“His most lasting political achievement was leading the negotiations for the 1985 USA – Bermuda Tax Convention. These high-level discussions included meetings with the President, Vice-President, Secretary of the Treasury, Secretary of State, National Security Advisor, and members of Congress. The resulting agreement helped establish Bermuda’s reinsurance and insurance sectors and secured the island’s reputation as a major offshore financial centre, laying the groundwork for the strong, regulated economy Bermuda has today.

“Sir John has been honoured numerous times for his service. In 1990, he was knighted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) and appointed a Justice of the Peace. He has received awards from the Bermuda Jaycees, the International Association of Lions Clubs, the Poor Richard Club of Philadelphia, and St. Paul’s AME Church. He was also admitted to the Freedom of the City of London, made an Honorary Member of the Hamilton Rotary Club, appointed a Senator of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and inducted into the Company of Honorary Fellows of Bermuda College. In 2010, he was one of the first four inductees into the Bermuda Business Hall of Fame.

“He earned a Bachelor of Arts from West Virginia Wesleyan College, which also awarded him an Honorary Doctorate. He received additional honorary doctorates from Atlantic Union College, the University of Tampa, and Morris Brown College.

“Sir John served as Chairman of the Swan Group of Companies and remained actively involved in international business, public policy, and real estate development, including his long-time advocacy for the revitalization of the Hamilton Waterfront. He passionately supported local charitable causes and was a patron of Bermudian theatre for more than three decades.”

Update: Opposition Leader Ben Smith said, “On behalf of the One Bermuda Alliance, I would like to extend my sincerest condolences to the family of the late Sir John Swan, who is also my godfather.

“Sir John was undoubtedly a unique character who will forever hold a place in Bermuda’s history as our longest serving Premier. He was affable, and admired by many, regardless of where they sat on the political spectrum. He treated everyone with high regard—he was truly a man of the people.

“Sir John, thank you for your service to the people of Bermuda throughout the years. May you rest in eternal peace.”

Former Premier Michael Dunkley

Update: Former Premier Michael Dunkley said, “National Hero Sir John Swan was a transformational leader who made Bermuda a better place for all Bermudians. His tenure as Premier was filled with change and progress for the island and people he served. Even after he stepped down as Premier and away from elected office Sir John continued to help, provide advice and was a mentor for countless people.

“Sir John was comfortable in any situation and all surroundings. A man of the people who was always thinking about Bermuda and Bermudians. I have known Sir John since I was a teenager and was blessed to consider him a friend, mentor and trusted person to talk with at anytime. It was a privilege and honor to bestow Sir John as a National Hero, the only living National Hero, when I was the Premier.

“His dedication and service to Bermuda is well documented and will forever be etched in our history. Sir John was also very successful in business and a family man.

“Upon learning of his passing I called and offered condolences, from my family to the Swan family, during this difficult period. May the Lord provide them strength and comfort. Rest in Peace Sir John, National Hero.”

FDM Leader Marc Bean

Update: FDM Leader Marc Bean said, “Today, I join Bermudians in mourning the passing of Sir John Swan. Upon assuming the role of Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Progressive Labour Party, Sir John reached out and invited to meet with him. I accepted that invitation with gratitude, not fully appreciating at the time how meaningful that conversation would become.

“During our meeting, Sir John offered me a simple yet profound piece of advice. He said that for Bermuda to mature and advance, we must never view politics as a winner-take-all, zero-sum game. At the time, I understood the words, but it was only through the years that followed, that I came to fully appreciate the wisdom behind them.

“That moment revealed something important about Sir John. Beyond the titles, accomplishments, and public recognition was a man who genuinely cared about Bermuda and its future. He understood that while political parties may differ, our ultimate responsibility is to the people and to the country we all share. In a political environment that too often rewards division, he chose instead to offer guidance, perspective, and encouragement.

:Sir John belonged to a generation of leaders who helped shape modern Bermuda. His contributions to our country are well documented and will rightly be remembered. Yet today, my thoughts are not focused solely on the former Premier and international statesman. They are with the family, friends, and loved ones who have lost a father, grandfather, colleague, mentor, and friend.

“On behalf of the Free Democratic Movement, I extend heartfelt condolences to Sir John’s family and to all Bermudians saddened by his passing. We give thanks for his life, his service, and his enduring commitment to this Island.

“As we reflect on his passing, may we also reflect on the lesson he shared with me years ago: that Bermuda advances not when one side wins and another loses, but when we remember that we are all stewards of the same country and servants of the same people.

“May Sir John Swan rest in eternal peace, and may his family find comfort in the knowledge that his life’s work helped shape Bermuda’s journey and touched countless lives along the way.”

Update: A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party joins all of Bermuda in expressing our condolences on the passing of Sir John Swan, KBE, JP, former Premier of Bermuda and National Hero.

“Sir John served in public office for more than two decades, including thirteen years as Premier — the longest tenure of any Premier in Bermuda’s history. Across those years, he was committed to the service of Bermuda and its people.

“We mourn a man who answered the call of public service and gave much of his life to it.

“To his children — Alison, Amanda, and Nicholas — and to all of Bermuda who mourn his passing, we extend our deepest condolences. We wish the Swan family comfort and strength during this difficult time.”

City of Hamilton

“Sir John was more than a former Premier. Update: Former Premier Dr. Ewart Brown said, “Bermuda has lost a national hero and I have lost a personal friend. Sir John Swan was a skillful politician and a shrewd businessman. He navigated Bermuda’s challenging political waters during the early days of party politics and went on to become the island’s longest serving Premier. Bermuda must forever be grateful for the many accomplishments of Sir John.

“Notably, during his tenure, Bermuda became more globally renowned than ever. Even though we are a tiny island nation, we can still walk tall and take a rightful place on the world stage. Personally, Wanda and I were fortunate to spend special times with John and his late wife, Lady Jackie Swan — especially after I left active politics. John and I had many good times filled with camaraderie and laughter, even though we disagreed on many things. Our friendship can provide a lesson for younger compatriots.

“Whether on the same side of the aisle or not, those of us who share a love of country can still find a way to talk with each other, enjoy each other and care deeply for our respective families. John and I were fortunate to experience what the party system could never deliver — dedication to country first, along with mutual respect and fondness, irrespective of party affiliation.

“Our heart-felt condolences are extended to his children and grandchildren.”

“It is with profound sadness that we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Sir John Swan KBE, Bermuda’s longest serving Premier and its first living National Hero.

“Sir John’s life was one of distinguished service, visionary leadership, and unwavering commitment to the people of Bermuda. His legacy as a statesman and national hero will endure for generations.

“We in the Jamaican community hold a special appreciation for Sir John. In the aftermath of the last hurricane, he was among the generous donors who gave toward hurricane relief efforts in Jamaica. That act of compassion reflected the depth of his character and his care for our island home.”
