Video: Harvey And Williamson On Games
Bermuda swimmers Jack Harvey and Sam Williamson said they are proud to represent the island at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
They were both in action on the opening day of the competition yesterday [July 24] at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre.
Harvey qualified for the men’s 50 metres backstroke semi-finals, winning his heat in 25.50sec. He placed fifth in his semi-final in 25.20.
Meanwhile, Williamson finished fifth in his heat in the men’s 200 individual medley in 2:06.92.
Harvey, who will also compete in the 100 backstroke, said his previous Commonwealth Games experience in Birmingham four years ago is proving beneficial.
“It helps to have raced at the Commonwealths before,” he told Bernews.
“The more meets you go to, the more you get used to the process.
“I’ll definitely look to build on what I did in Birmingham.
“There’s a lot of pride in representing Bermuda. No one else wears the pink jerseys like we do.”
Joining the pair in Bermuda’s swimming team are Harvey’s sister, Emma, and siblings Elan and Elijah Daley.
“This is the biggest team I’ve ever been part of at a major Games,” Harvey added.
“It’s a lot more fun when you’re sitting together, eating dinner or travelling to the venues.
“It helps take the pressure off. We just want to make Bermuda proud.”
Williamson said he is enjoying his first appearance at the Games.
“It’s my first Commonwealth Games and it’s really exciting,” he said.
“It’s great to be racing against some of the best athletes in the Commonwealth, and I’m really excited to be here.
“It feels great to be representing Bermuda. Everyone knows who we are because of the pink jerseys.”
