Madelyn Moore and Emma Harvey both achieved personal bests in the semi-finals of their events at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham today.

Moore, competing in the 50 metres freestyle, finished seventh in heat two in 25.72sec at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre.

Moore told Bernews: “First Commonwealth Games, first semi-final, it was a real big deal for me.

“I was trying to keep the nerves at bay. [My performance] was a big boost. The atmosphere was amazing.”

Meanwhile, Harvey placed seventh in heat two of the 100 backstroke in 1:03.82.

“I’m just so proud of myself,” she said. “It’s been a tough couple of years [due to Covid-19]. Coming out on the biggest stage and swimming my lifetime best, I’m just really happy.

“The atmosphere was amazing; it was a great experience.

“When I put pressure on myself, I get nervous. I just tried to take all that energy and bring it into myself. It’s probably what allowed me to have such a great performance.”

“My best races are the 50 fly and 50 back,” she added. “I’m really excited about the 50 back on Tuesday. Tonight, I felt really strong.

Despite their superb displays, neither swimmer advanced to the final of their events.
