Bermudian footballer Jace Donawa scored his first official collegiate goal for the University of North Carolina [UNC] in a 3-2 defeat away to the University of Memphis on Monday [August 24].

The freshman forward entered the match as a substitute and found the net in the 43rd minute after receiving a long delivery from Nick Lockermann.

UNC’s official match report said Donawa “battled past the Memphis defense to tap it past the onrushing keeper,” reducing Memphis’s advantage to 3-2 shortly before half-time.

Memphis had taken a 2-0 lead through goals from Eben McIntyre and Renan Syrio before Joschi Schelb pulled one back for UNC. Carson Banham restored the home team’s two-goal advantage before Donawa completed the first-half scoring.

Neither team scored after the interval, with Memphis holding on for the victory at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.

Donawa registered one shot, which was on target and resulted in his goal. The university confirmed it was the first goal of his collegiate career.

The Bermudian — who was part of our gold medal winning team at the Island Games — previously scored during UNC’s 5-4 exhibition victory over Liberty earlier this month; however, the Memphis goal was his first in an official regular-season match.

UNC will host VCU in their home opener on Friday [August 28].
