The Adara Group has raised more than AUD $1 million [BDA $711,000] through its Nepal Flood Emergency Appeal to support communities affected by devastating floods, which killed more than 1,000 people and caused catastrophic damage.

A spokesperson said, “The Adara Group, founded in Bermuda in 1998, has swung into action to support thousands of people affected by the disaster. With generous backing from Bermuda and donors around the world, Adara’s Nepal team is working alongside communities, local authorities and first responders to meet urgent needs.

“More than AUD $1 million has been raised through Adara’s Nepal Flood Emergency Appeal, following an extraordinary response. The funds are enabling Adara’s team in Nepal to respond to urgent needs while working with communities, government agencies and other organisations to assess where Adara can make the most meaningful contribution to the longer-term recovery.

Adara’s Founder and Chair Audette Exel, who previously served as Managing Director of Bermuda Commercial Bank, said the response demonstrated the power of communities coming together in times of crisis.

“It has been heartbreaking to witness the profound loss caused by these floods. It has also been deeply moving to see communities caring for one another and beginning the difficult process of recovery.

“We have been completely blown away by the generosity of Adara’s Bermuda community. Your support is enabling our team in Nepal to respond to urgent needs now, while carefully assessing where Adara can make the most meaningful contribution over the longer term.

A spokesperson said, “Working alongside local authorities, first responders and affected communities, Adara’s immediate response is focused on safe water, sanitation and hygiene, known as WASH, and child protection.

“Adara is supporting the installation of a deep bore water source in a community where residents, including more than 800 schoolchildren, have been forced to rely on bottled water. The organisation has also distributed thousands of hygiene kits through local schools and is rolling out practical WASH training for teachers and children.

“Children are among the most vulnerable during emergencies. Displacement, trauma, separation from caregivers and prolonged disruption to schooling can all increase the risks they face. Drawing on their deep experience in child protection and education, Adara is working with affected communities to identify emerging protection and education needs as schools reopen.

“Alongside this immediate response, Adara is coordinating with government agencies and other organisations to avoid duplication and ensure its resources are directed where they can have the greatest impact. Longer-term recovery activities will be confirmed as this assessment progresses. Adara will confirm its longer-term recovery activities as this assessment progresses.”

“I could not be prouder of our Nepal team,” said Audette Exel. “While witnessing this devastation firsthand and navigating their own grief and trauma, their immediate instinct has been to ask how Adara can help.

“There is still a long road ahead. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of supporters in Bermuda and around the world, Adara will continue standing alongside communities as they recover and rebuild. As need rises, so do we.”
