Adara To Assist After Catastrophe In Nepal
The Bermuda-founded Adara Group is preparing to support communities in Nepal after catastrophic flash flooding struck the northern region of the country.
In an official update, the organisation said: “All Adara staff are safe.”
Adara said Nuwakot District, where its work in Ghyangfedi is based, had been affected by the wider disaster, although its project sites had not been directly impacted at the time of the update.
The Adara-supported Shree Ghyangfedi School, which is located close to the river, was temporarily closed following consultations with local authorities and community leaders. The organisation said it was conducting a risk assessment and was in the early stages of preparing its emergency response.
Adara has activated its risk committee and is assessing the potential effects on its staff, programmes and operations. It said it will work with Nepal’s Social Welfare Council, the Nepali Government and other agencies to coordinate its response.
Audette Exel, Adara’s founder and chair, said: “To everyone reaching out in support of our teams and the Nepali people, we are so grateful.”
The flooding began on Wednesday [August 26] near Nepal’s border with China. The United States Geological Survey said the catastrophic debris flow and flooding were likely triggered by a glacial collapse in Langtang National Park.
The debris and floodwaters travelled almost 100 kilometres downstream, affecting populated areas along the Trishuli and Bhote Koshi rivers. Hundreds of people have died, while rescue and recovery operations remain under way.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies estimated that approximately 93,000 people may have been affected. Homes have been destroyed or seriously damaged, while washed-out bridges and damaged roads have left some communities isolated.
The IFRC has launched a CHF25 million emergency appeal to support the Nepal Red Cross Society, following the release of almost CHF1 million in emergency funding. Assistance includes food, drinking water, shelter supplies, first aid and other emergency materials.
