Saltus Grammar School Honours 9/11 Victims
Saltus Grammar School held a ceremony today [Sept 11] in honour of those who perished in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001, including Saltus alumni Boyd Gatton and Robert D Higley II, as well as Bermudian Rhondelle Tankard.
A spokesperson said, “Today at Saltus, we gathered with solemn hearts to honour the memory of two Saltus alumni, Boyd Gatton, Class of 1980, and Robert D. Higley II, Class of 1989, as well as Bermudian Rhondelle Tankard, who tragically lost their lives in the September 11th terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001.
“This day, 25 years ago, marks a profound and sorrowful chapter in history, one that forever changed the lives of so many around the world. We stand together to reflect not only on the lives lost but also on the resilience and strength of the human spirit in the face of such unimaginable adversity.
“In remembrance of Boyd and Robert, we placed two wreaths at the base of this memorial palm tree, a symbol of Saltus Grammar School’s enduring commitment to keeping their memories alive. Two of their former classmates from the Class of 1980, Jay Correia and Mike Bishop, attended the commemoration and joined our two Head Prefects in placing the wreaths.
“This commemoration signifies that Boyd and Robert will forever remain part of the Saltus family, with their legacy continuing to be honoured across generations within our community. As we remember their lives today, let us also extend our thoughts to all who were affected by the events of September 11th, ensuring that the lessons of unity, courage, and compassion endure in our hearts.
“Our ceremony concluded with Captain Sheldon Fox of the Royal Bermuda Regiment playing ‘Taps’ in tribute to the memory of those we have lost.”
