Sean Trott Organises Second 5K For Charity
Sean Trott has put a twist on the traditional road race for the second Word of Life Bermuda 5K Run and Walk, with competitors challenged to predict their finishing time without the use of a watch or other timing device.
The event will take place at Astwood Park on Saturday, October 10, with proceeds going towards Word of Life Bermuda, a Christian mission organisation that runs programmes and summer camps for young people.
The main race will be a time-handicap event, with runners not allowed to use phones, watches or other timing devices during the race, while there will be no visible clock at the finish.
The winner will be the runner whose finishing time is closest to their predicted time.
Last year’s event raised more than $5,000, with Trott, who won the Bermuda Day Marathon Derby last year, giving competitors a five-minute headstart before chasing down all but seven runners.
“We’ve changed the chase concept slightly from last year and put it in a different direction,” Trott told Bernews.
“This year, it will be a time-handicap race. When people sign-up, they can enter a time they think they can run a 5k.
“They won’t be allowed to run with any timing devices – phones, watches etc – so they will chase the time blind.
“It’s not about the first person across the line, it’s the person who knows their body the best.”
The event will also feature a one-mile race for children aged 12 and under, a competitive 5K race walk and a 5K non-competitive run/walk.
The one-mile race starts at 8am, with the other events beginning at 8.20am.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in the one-mile race, competitive 5K race walk and 5K time-handicap run.
The 5K run will also have male and female prizes in the junior, open, masters, seniors, veterans and super veterans age categories.
Trott, who represented Bermuda at the International Island Games in Orkney, Scotland, last year, has previously run to support the Word of Life Bermuda’s Grace Island Project, helping raise funds to upgrade the island.
The charity gained ownership of Grace Island in 2018 and has developed it as a youth camp site.
“Word of Life Bermuda means a lot to me,” Trott added.
“They put on various clubs in schools, churches and give children and teenagers opportunities to learn about life principles from the bible.
“They develop character and emphasise good values based on the bible and help them become good citizens.”
