Boycott Remembers Sobers Playing On Island
Former England cricketer Sir Geoff Boycott has recalled playing alongside legendary West Indian all-rounder Sir Garfield Sobers during a tour of Bermuda in 1964.
Sobers, who died aged 89 in July, played as a guest for Boycott’s Yorkshire side against several teams, including St George’s Cricket Club at Wellington Oval.
He scored 117, helping the touring side recover from 48 for five.
Boycott, considered one of England’s greatest batters, made 108 as Yorkshire reached 322 for eight.
St George’s were then bowled out for 48, with Sobers and Fred Trueman taking four wickets each.
Talking to the Stick to Cricket podcast, Boycott said: “I played one match with Garry Sobers in Bermuda.
“He came as a guest in ’64 when [Yorkshire] were going to America, Canada and Bermuda. We brought him as a guest for Bermuda.
“We were five wickets down for nothing. The wicket was covered concrete and the ball was flying through. Sobers comes in and the ball is bouncing.
“He said to their captain, ‘No more bouncers.’ At the end of the over, I said, ‘What about me?’
“He said, ‘No more bouncers to him either.’ We both scored a hundred. I said, ‘I’d like batting with you more often!’”
