The Bermuda Police Rugby Football Club has appointed Frans Smit and Alice Craig as its men’s and ladies’ captains respectively for the 2027 season.

A spokesperson said, “Smit will lead the men’s team with the support of vice-captains Jason Chlup and Simon Thompson, while Craig will be supported by ladies’ vice-captains Hannah Veitch and Anna McLeod.

“The appointments establish the leadership groups that will guide both teams during the coming campaign, with the new captains expected to play important roles both on and off the pitch.

“Dylan Marshall, the newly appointed chairman of BPRFC, welcomed Smit and Craig to their new positions and said their appointments continued the club’s proud tradition of leadership.”

“It is a privilege to welcome Frans and Alice into these important leadership roles,” Marshall said.

“Bermuda Police Rugby Football Club has a deep and proud history, and many great players have previously occupied the positions they now assume. Both roles carry considerable responsibility, but I am confident that Frans and Alice will embrace the challenge.

“They have exemplary records representing Police and have consistently demonstrated their commitment, character and dedication to the club. We wish them every success and look forward to the positive influence they will have, both on the field and throughout the wider club.”

The spokesperson said, “The announcement comes as Bermuda rugby continues its efforts to rebuild participation following the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Marshall acknowledged that playing numbers had declined in recent years but said there were encouraging signs that interest in the sport was beginning to recover.”

“Rugby participation, specially the younger generation, in Bermuda has dwindled since Covid, but we are now starting to see encouraging signs of a resurgence,” he said.

“We want to build on that momentum and remind people that there is a place at the club for everyone, whether they are experienced players, returning to the game or trying rugby for the first time.”

Marshall also encouraged residents interested in a non-contact version of the sport to consider touch rugby which is offered at most training sessions.

“Anyone interested in trying rugby or touch rugby is encouraged to get in touch with the club, where we welcome players of all ages and abilities,” he added.

“Touch rugby provides a non-tackling alternative and is an excellent way to become involved in the sport. Rugby offers great fitness, camaraderie, a wide range of social events and, most importantly, genuine enjoyment.

“We would be delighted to hear from anyone who wants to come along, meet the club and give the game a try.”

The spokesperson said, “With Smit and Craig leading their respective teams, supported by their vice-captains, Police will enter the 2027 season with a refreshed leadership structure and an ambition to contribute to the continued revival of rugby across the island.”
