[Opinion column written by Minister Jason Hayward]

In the first article of this series, I reinforced the commitment to producing a National Social Development Strategy centred on empowerment, inclusion and social mobility. As a Government, our approach to governance should always be one that puts the people first.

As a society, we do well at identifying challenges and on this campaign journey I have listened to the individual and collective challenges Bermudians are facing. Our primary view is that a strategic pivot is required, moving from responding to crises towards preventing them.

For example, instead of only assisting families experiencing hardships, we must improve pathways to empowerment. Instead of responding only after young people become involved in antisocial behaviour, we must increase investments in education, mentoring, counselling, recreation and employment opportunities. Instead of treating social protections as isolated interventions, we must connect them with increased skills development, employment support and economic empowerment.

Homes for Bermudians

Secondly, At the heart of the social Development Strategy we will have a commitment to making Bermuda more affordable and ensuring that Bermudians can build secure and fulfilling lives in their own country. Those working hard to support their families should never feel that they cannot afford to live in our country, however the reality is too many Bermudians are feeling marginalized.

The cost of housing, groceries, childcare, healthcare and other essentials places considerable pressure on household budgets. We will continue to support the current ambitious housing agenda that will create 400 additional affordable homes. We have already commenced the initial phase of this plan. The following units are being constructed for Bermudian families:

  • 36 units at Victoria Row in Sandys
  • 24 units at Albert Row in Sandys
  • 24 units at Tommy Fox Road in St. David’s
  • 110 units at Dr Cann Park II in Southampton

These newly constructed units will reduce financial pressures on many working families. Additionally, we will also increase support for first-time homeowners, via the construction of units for purchase.

Our commitment

The commitment to social and economic empowerment is a primary objective set out in the constitution of the Progressive Labour Party. Therefore supporting workers and working families is the core of who we are. We will continue strengthening consumer protections and pursuing practical measures to reduce everyday living costs. We will also pursue an ambitious workers’ agenda built around decent work, better wages, equal access to opportunity, upskilling, and increased labour protections.

I believe every Bermudian should have a fair opportunity to secure a home, raise a family, pursue meaningful employment and build a better future. A stronger Bermuda begins with stronger families, affordable living and a community where people can thrive.
