Trott And Komarkova Win Word Of Life 5K Race
Sean Trott and Marta Komarkova won their respective divisions at the second annual Word of Life Bermuda 5K, which also featured a time-handicap challenge.
Trott finished first overall in the men’s 5K in 16:25.88 to win the 20-39 age group, while Komarkova was the first female finisher in 22:38.45, taking the women’s 20-39 title.
The event also introduced a handicap competition in which runners predicted their finishing times before the race and attempted to match those predictions without watches, GPS devices or other timing aids.
Topher Cox won the men’s handicap contest in 28:00.82, finishing less than a second outside his predicted time of 28 minutes. Kevin Topple placed second in 22:58.62 against a prediction of 23 minutes, while Derrick Hendrickson finished third in 28:57.22, compared with his predicted time of 28:50.
Jennifer Chisnall won the women’s handicap competition in 28:10.78, ahead of her predicted time of 28:30. Melina Finnigan finished second in 41:35.85 against a prediction of 42 minutes, while Florence Sharp placed third in 39:05.81, compared with her predicted time of 39:36.
Other men’s age-group winners were Lucas Ferreira in the 10-19 division in 20:30.81, Unday Smith in the 40-49 category in 24:41.80, Colin Thompson in the 50-59 division in 28:44.65, and Topple in the 60-69 category in 22:58.69.
In the women’s age groups, Lea Osborne won the 60-69 division in 27:02.41.
Ciboney Jade Swan was the first overall finisher in the 5K walk, winning the women’s division in 41:26.98. Floyd Ming led the men’s walkers, finishing in 43:25.81.
In the junior one-mile race, Will Biram finished first in 6:29.55, while Keziah Symonds-Smith led the girls’ field in 8:11.16.
The event attracted 26 competitive entrants, alongside recreational runners and walkers, and raised nearly $3,000 for Word of Life Bermuda to support youth programmes across the island.
