Bermudian triathlete Tyler Smith finished 13th in the elite men’s race at the World Triathlon Cup San Pedro de la Paz in Chile on Sunday [November 1], completing the Olympic-distance event in 1hr 46min 45sec.
Competing against an international field of 65 athletes, Smith tackled a 1.5-kilometre swim, 40-kilometre cycling leg and 10-kilometre run in the southern Chilean city.
The Bermudian produced a strong finishing run, recording a time of 30 minutes and 45 seconds over the final 10 kilometres to move up the standings and secure a top-15 finish.
American Morgan Pearson claimed victory in 1:45:03, finishing 33 seconds ahead of France’s Louis Vitiello, who took second in 1:45:36. Hungary’s Márton Kropkó completed the podium in 1:45:39.
Smith entered the event following a fifth-place finish at the Europe Triathlon Cup Ceuta in Spain on October 4, where he completed the sprint-distance race in 52:03, just nine seconds behind the winner.
Earlier this year, the Bermudian Olympian claimed a bronze medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games in the Dominican Republic and won the Bermuda National Triathlon Championships at Clearwater Beach.
