Bermuda Telephone Company to Cut 25 Jobs

March 30, 2010

btc bermudaOne of Bermuda’s foremost employers, Bermuda Telephone Company [BTC] has announced plans to cut approximately 25 jobs in an effort to reduce costs as part of a restructuring plan. The decision was made as a result of loss of revenue associated with land lines.

President and CEO Francis Mussenden said the decline in land line business was created by the emergence of popularity in cell phones, in what he termed “phone without homes”. Mr. Mussenden also compared the scenario to popularity of the personal computer over old stalwarts such as typewriters.

This comes after news of local telecommunications company Cable and Wireless making staff redundant, and news that Holmes Williams and Purvey [HWP] will close down two departments and will lay off approximately 14 staff on April 30, 2010.

The telecommunications company launched in 1887 with a three digit numbering scheme and operator switched calls, continuing with that for the next 45 years until a conversion to a dial system in 1932.
