USA Wins Twenty20 Cricket, Bermuda 4th
The final day of the Americas T20 Championship saw the USA win the top title. In the morning session at Somerset, Bahamas finally won a game by defeating rivals Argentina by 8 runs to capture 5th place. You may recall in the 50 over series these two tied with scores of 333 each with the Bahamas losing 3 wickets for two runs at the end of their innings. Today was payback time and the islanders came out on top.
Scores: Bahamas 146/6 (20 overs), Argentina 138/10 (19.3 overs)
In the first semi final at the National Stadium, Beemuda put forward a valiant effort, but went down to defeat by a narrow margin of two wickets on the last ball of the match. The USA bowlers did well to contain the Bermudian bats but a fighting innings from skipper David Hemp allowed the host to set a modest target of 137. For the USA Lennox Cush took his side to victory with an outstanding innings of 65 but it was Rashard Marshall with 25 not out who steered his side home as Ghous hit the final ball for a single to advance to the afternoons final.
Scores: Bermuda 137/5 (20 overs) D.Hemp 47, USA 138/8 (20 overs) L.Cush 65 R. Marshall 25 not out)
In the second semi final played at St David’s, Cayman Islands made a stunning recovery after being 41/6 when Saheed Mohamed (62) and Conroy Wright (43) allowed Cayman to set a respectable target of 153. But the powerhouse Canada had little trouble surpassing it in just 15.4 overs to set up the clash against the USA for the title.
Scores: Cayman 153/6 (20 overs) S. Mohamed 62, C. Wright 43, Canada 155/5 (15.4overs) S. Joyti 58 S. Dhaniram 30
In the afternoon games at St David’s Cayman Islands upset Bermuda to take 3rd place in the T20 overall standing. Bermuda batted first and made 133/8 in their 20 overs. Irving Romaine was the top batsman with 42 runs.
Cayman Islands shocked the host by passing the target in the 19th over for eight wickets. S. Mohammed who had 40 runs was the top scorer.
In the final at the National Stadium the USA won the toss and sent Canada into bat. It was one of the rare occasions that Canada had to set a target as their preference all week was to chase. Wickets tumbled as their entire top order was removed for less than 20 runs. S. Joyti with a good knock of 43 tried a recovery, but none of the other batsmen were willing to join in and the favourites set the USA an easy target of 100 runs. Steve Massiah with 3/21 in 3.3 overs and Lennox Cush 2/10 were the main wreckers of the Canadian batting.
There was some hope for the Canadians as they quickly removed Massiah and Cush from the batting attack, but in the end 100 runs was just an impossible target to defend against such a sound batting order of the USA. A. Thagarajar 27, and C. Wright 21 brought the championship home as the USA won it by 5 wickets.
Final Order T20
- 1. USA
