Four Men With Gun Attack 77-Year-Old Man

October 2, 2010

[Updated] Last night [Oct 1] at around 11pm, a 77-year-old man was attacked by four men in Hamilton Parish, with the suspects pushing him to the ground and brandishing a gun at him.

The victim, businessman Mr. Calworth Furbert, is the father of The Hon. Wayne Furbert JP, MP member of the PLP.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines confirmed that the Police received a report of a robbery at 11:18pm last night in Hamilton Parish, saying it appears that approximately four males attacked a 77-year-old man, while – as the Police term it – “brandishing a weapon”. Police further stated the suspects pushed the man and stole his cell phone.

Bernews unofficially understands that neighbours[s] came out, causing the suspects to flee.

Both official and unofficial reports confirm the welcome news that Mr Furbert did not sustain any serious injuries during his ordeal.

A Police investigation into this matter is underway, and anyone with any information should contact Police Headquarters at 295-0011 or the [confidential, anonymous, US-based] Crimestoppers Hotline on 1-800-8477(800-TIPS).

This is the second reported case in the last month of younger suspects jointly attacking a senior citizen, following the robbery of a 74-year-old taxi driver in broad daylight by three men on September 3rd.

Update Oct 3, 4:00pm: Wayne Furbert has commented multiple times about this sad scenario on our Facebook page.

Update Oct 3, 4:23pm: Official information from the Police:

Around 11:20pm on Friday, Police received a report of a robbery on Redkiln Road in Hamilton parish. It appears that the victim, a 77 year old taxi driver from Hamilton parish, was accosted by four unknown men outside his residence after parking and exiting his vehicle.

One of the men apparently brandished a weapon while another brandished a bladed article. The suspects took the victim’s BlackBerry cellular phone and made good their escape on foot towards the Railway Trail. The 77 year old Hamilton parish man received relatively minor injuries as a result.

The suspects are described as four young men dressed in dark coloured clothing. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with any information to contact the St. George’s Criminal Investigation Unit on 293-2222.

well if you hate most of us..get the f##k off the island !!!! its because of you foreigner why Bermuda is in this mess now..

  3. Why! says:

The least amout of crime is committed where where cannabis is legal so maybe they do need to legalize it. But on the other hand having to rob a 77 year old man is a cowardly act! But its quite obvious that this robbery was just a trial run for them to see if they had the courage because the only thing stolen was a cell phone :s I mean how stupid is that! But nevertheless it has been done & maybe now we will see the government proactively trying to control these situations instead of having a press conference everytime something of this nature happens!

  4. herbalist says:

jason-u really think these young knuckleheads are robbin from the rich to give to the poor? you got it twisted son, they are cowards, attackin senior citizens because they scared to man up and get a job

    • D says:

Even with a degree is it hard to get a job in Bermuda. With two degrees and after 17 interviews it took me 5 months. I went abroad for a week and it for given 3 job offers.

      I work in Insurance.

        • Tired of nonsense says:

Nothing to do with your color.

If you talk as ignorant as you type I wouldn’t hire you either…

        • Logic76 says:

If you spell bachelor’s “bacholors” and though “tho”, people “ppl”, then I am certainly not surprised you don’t have a job!

        • TOTALLY DISGUSTED! says:

Why don’t you learn how to spell bachelor’s degree and maybe you will find a job..ya dumb arse!!! stop sitting around feeling sorry for yourself and do something positive..all the negative vibes you throw out will only continue to bounce right back at you!! Oh and the race card…please please don’t play that one…it’s old and boring, no excuse….by the sounds of it, you will grow old complaining about the same old sh#T because you would rather sit on your lazy arse than to do anything with yourself….excuse me if I’m wrong but this is the kind of person you portray yourself to be…oh and this is the last bit of time I waste on you so LOL all you want…you can even come back with all the B.S you continue to speak….I’ll just laugh at you from my corner office over-looking the harbor…oh and I too have a bachelor’s degree in computer science and am as black as ever..didn’t stop me…so grow up and please SHUT UP!!!!

  5. hobbit311 says:

    Really? Seriously? Stay classy Bermuda.

  6. terry says:

Jason…your an idiot. Period. Having read your comments, they make no sense. “I bet now that his family has been touched”. Please enlighten us all what that comment means.

As for your last sentence…what the hell has “legalize it” have to do with anything.

AH!!!! you must be talking about Gunja and/or other drugs. Your right..lets do it. You’ll have a job and we will all be one happy crappy non-tourist destination.

Or did you mean “legailze it” with referance to attacking the ones, the pillars of our community, counrty like Mr Fubert.

Yoo need a slap hup syde yah chups buy…………………..

    • Concerned says:

I am praying for Bermuda BIG TIME!I can’t believe what “Jason” wrote. It’s okay to rob a 77 yr old man?? Only a coward would do that. I live in the Hood of Detroit and on these streets you are a coward for touching kids and the elderly! So because you are poor, uneducated, jobless, and marijuana is illegal.. you just walk around attacking the rich!!!?? Sad Sad Sad!! You all need to get on your knees and pray. If you have young guys with Jason’s mentality in your country its going to be DESTROYED QUICK!!! Dang that’s some GHETTO crap!! God bless you all!!

    • Logic76 says:

First time I’ve ever agreed with Terry! The world must be coming to an end!

    • jason says:

me? Taxi drivers the core? community? All them old farts do is drive up and down at 30kph irritating the shit out of me. I have a grandpa that drives taxi’s, but he knows not to pick up certain type of people, because he has common sense..

As for your comment about pillars of communities? A damn taxi driver has never done shit for me! And I know how most talk bad about Bermuda anyway..The problem with you people are you dont know anything about the streets. Come to my area of Bermuda! You would think your in Iraq! then lets find out who gets a slap upside the head!

      • yeah , right .. says:

I bet all your knowledge of ‘the streets’ has really been usefull to you eh ?
Gets you employment , housing , respect from people everywhere you go ….

      • Your Next says:

Jason are you sound like a coward behind a keyboard.

Do you know who this man’s family is. Yes the man son is Wayne Furbert, but their is another brother and he’s a beast.

I can tell you have know idea who he is, because if you did you wouldn’t be saying these remarks. I’ll tell you this much he’s the one people need to worry about, and he’s also a friend of mine. Glad he’s on my team. Why don’t you put your full name on here so I can show him what you had to say about his dad.

      • Give me a break says:

“Come to my area of Bermuda!”…Really?! Bermuda is 21 square miles…your area is my area…we are all neighbours. Bermuda is way too small for this crap! Give me a break! Also…no comparison can be made to Iraq! Maybe you should get yourself over there so you can truly see what it is like to live in a war zone! Where the Robin Hoods have their hands chopped off for stealing! Yeah that’s right! And on that side of the world some drug crimes are punishable with life sentences or even death!

      • Logic76 says:

Don’t you dare speak of your “area” in the same sentence of Iraq. You are an ignorant fool and you know nothing of the world outside of this island. Wake up, get an education and some common sense. Maybe then you will earn the respect you seem to think you’re entitled to.

  7. Mixitup says:

Pa Bear, You are no better than Jason with your “Bermudian Bashing” comment. Wherever you are from, I bet your bottom dollar you have far worse stupidity spewed than Jason’s, does that mean you’re a jerk also? I think not. It’s ignorant enough to think your comment, let alone say it.

    • joe says:

Hey Tee, very good post. To the point. I lived in Bermuda for a long stint and love the hell out of her and when I see this it just bothers me to no end. I live in Massachusetts now and know what you talk about. These guys are lucky that even in jail in Bermuda it is more of a hotel atmosphere than real time. It is too bad they want to emulate this gang banger mentality. I hope something is done real soon or else Bermuda will lose her status as a haven for tourism with peace and quiet and EXTREMELY well mannered, respectful people of ALL races, colors, creeds.

      • Logic76 says:

Send them to New Bedford or Lynne! Show them what it’s really like!

        • joe says:

I live in New Bedford, New Bedford is very small potatoes compared to Mattapan or Dorchester. Granted it is not too good of a town. BUt I am not glorifying that behaviour I’m just pointing out to Jason that Bermuda is nowhere near Iraq. That is what he said and i pointed out some of these spots as way more dangerous than Bermuda and it is just so sad that a small island with such friendly, well educated, well dressed, genuinely wonderful humanity is now in the throes of gangbanger wanna bees.

    • jason says:

atlanta is the ##### capitol of the world..Been there and seen it with my own eyes..

  9. KMHBermuda says:

OK…a propos of nothing to do with the original story: some of you need to learn how to write in proper English, not in net-speak. I can’t understand a word of half of what you’ve written. Remember full words, commas, full stops? Use them if you want to appear to make an intelligent contribution to the discussion.
Next…@Jason… “give us jobs”?…go apply for something…anything…even working flipping burgers. In the word of Bill Gates “Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping — they called it opportunity.” GIVE you a job? Go find one.
As far as the gentleman who was attacked by these jackasses, I wish him well and I hope and pray that karma really does work and comes around to bite these guys in their collective butts. I have no time for jackasses like this…none.

  10. joe says:

Now it is getting interesting. Now they’re not just going after rival gang bangers. We are now getting into the realm of the gun wielders looking at the unarmed, unprotected populace thinking “hey I got a gun and these people cannot fight back”.

  11. joe says:

Hey Jason, you live in a make believe world! You comparing Bermuda’s tough area like Court street, Glebe Road area to Iraq? Tell you what bring your REALLY scary gangs from Bermuda to Detroit, Atlanta, Harlem, Compton,CA or even here in Mattapan or Dorchester Ma your little Bermudian thugs would run back to Bermuda with their little tails between their legs and join a Baptist Choir. Get real, get a job and live as MEN! You probably don’t what a real man is. A real man goes to work to take care of his WIFE and children a REAL man provides for his family without guns unless he is a soldier or policeman. And don’t cry about flipping burgers, that is real work or a step up(entry level job) until you get move up or progress as a person.

    • jason says:

yea well you go on a street, somewhere that you hear about, stand there and see how long it takes you to get robbed…

  12. u all need help says:

“Jason” if I were u I would stop typing the madness u typing on this page. You are making urself look like a real idiot. I don’t understand how u can sit there n feel proud of what your peers have done to this poor gentleman.
As for u saying ur grandfather is a taxi driver, he doesn’t have to go and pick up people from a certain area or judge whether or not he wants to take a certain person here or there.
That person may look innocent n lovely at that time, but switch up. How would u feel if they did that to your grandfather? Or should I say would u even care, or talk about the situation just like how ur talking about this gentleman
Getting robbed!! People like u make me sick! I am praying for u! You nasty disrespectful person!

  13. TOTALLY DISGUSTED! says:

Nobody should even reply to the most humongous a##hole living JASON!! He is obviously trying to get everyone pissed off with him…when I read his comments..yes it angered me, but really he is just a piece of sh#t, a poor excuse for a human being…a waste of sperm, his mama should have aborted him….please don’t waste your time even replying to his stupidity….aXXhole!! (see I just wasted a precious minute of my time!) i’m out!!

    • jason says:

yes you did waste a minute !! It shows that you stooped to my level that fast !! LOL @ U too

      • TOTALLY DISGUSTED! says:

Why don’t you get hit by a stray bullet!!!! Then again with your attitude…it won’t be stray!! LOL @ U TOO!!!!! lmao!!! aXX!!!!

  14. Makai Dickerson says:

Reading these comments make me sad as it reflects the gaps we have in Bermuda. In this case its the gap between the streets and the working class.

Yes Jason has said some things that are out of line, but as people who seem to care about what happens on this island, you could have better served by trying to offer him an alternative way of thinking. By attacking him and attempting to make him sound dumb, you are passing up the opportunity to understand how some people doing these things think as he IS speaking how a lot of those working the streets think.

He spelled some words wrong and you say that’s why he has no job. Do you think that’s acceptable? That no matter how good a job he can do he should not be given work because he misspelled some words? How do you expect people to do different then?

You say flip burgers yet Bermudians are even overlooked for that because they ask for at least enough money to pay their rent and an guest worker will do it for far less.

Come on we are in serious times and we need to first understand each other then we can work with each other.

As to those saying they are from parts of america….ok that proves nothing as to what’s going on here, believe me these gangsters are real and some will hold their own anywhere. I was born in Detroit, the first known murder by gun for me was when I was 8 and my cousins boyfriend was shot at the store on the corner from my house, I was 9 when the first gun was put to my face, etc (cause I can go on.) When my mom moved us here for safety when I was 10 I was happy. Having been back and forth and being a part of the street life here and there, I know also the struggles and mentality faced. I came out of it to make a better way for those who feel there’s no other way. Because you can say one thing to them but what they see is different, you have to show them.

As to the topic at hand, Mr. Furbert is a pillar for this island as his work goes beyond a taxi, I serve on a government board with him and he has served on boards before my time. This should not have happened to him (or anyone) I am glad after speaking to him that he is shaken up yet still in good spirits and still willing to serve the people of Bermuda.

I came in to help all and I will work to show those that think like Jason that there is a different way.

LOL.. That was very entertaining I must admitt. Im not hear to judge anyone but nearly all the post displayed where child like. Contrast to all the post the last statement was very well articulated.
