Squash Tournament: Day 2 Results
Day 2 of the Bermuda, New York, New England Challenge Squash Tournament being held at the BSRA courts in Devonshire, saw Bermuda “A” Team led by Micah Franklin win by the narrowest of margins 6-5 in encounter against Bermuda “B” Team, while New York and New England finished all square at 5 matches each.
Micah Franklin led the way for Bermuda “A” with a win against Tommy Sherratt. Franklin is rapidly improving and was able to show that his recent first ever tournament win against Sherratt was no fluke. This time the match was a much closer encounter, with Sherratt making fewer errors, and both players displaying tremendous shot making skills and fitness, but Franklin’s hard training is paying off as he can maintain a fast pace as he demonstrated in the 3rd game when Sherratt took a 3 point lead only to have Franklin win a couple of crucial points after long rallies. He won the match 11-8, 11-6, 11-9.
Colin Alexander (Bda B) came from 2 games down to win a thrilling 5 game match against Tony Prentice (Bda A) while Greg Fitzgerald (Bda B) managed a narrow win against Liz Martin (Bda A). Fitzgerald won the first 2 games, but Martin fought back hard to level the match at 2-2. The deciding game was a real battle with Fitzgerald finally prevailing 11-9. This was a night of close encounters as Peter Barrett and Joe Budzynski also went to 5 games before Barrett squeezed ahead to win the decider 11-9. Credit should go to organizer Patrick Foster who tried to select two Bermuda teams of equal abilities.
Other winners for Bermuda “A” were Daniel Sullivan, Greg Fitzgerald, Christian Ince, and Goretti Clementino, while Anthony Fellowes, Jane Chapman and Michelle Hodder won their matches for Bermuda “B”.
The matches between New York and New England went right down to the wire. Match of the night for the two U.S. teams was between Richard Von Hirschberg (NE) and Peter Cooper (NY). Cooper won the first two games only to have Von Hirschberg claw his way back into the match by leveling at 2-2 before squeezing past Cooper 11-9 in the deciding 5th game.
Winners for New England were Thomas Kiedel, Chris Ceasar, Joe Lardner and Vain Mehta, and for New York the ladies proved strong as Camilla Lancaster, Tracy Gates, and Kathy Mintz all won their matches convincingly. Harrison Sebring also scored a 3-1 victory for New York after losing the first game.
Saturdays final matches commence at 12 noon with the points total so far standing at Bermuda “A” 13 points, Bermuda “B” and New York 10 points, and New England 9 points.
