Photos & Video: Bill Ming’s Sculpture Unveiled
This afternoon [Mar.29] saw the unveiling of the sculpture titled “Against ‘da tide”, the work of Bermudian sculptor Bill Ming and sponsored by HSBC (Bermuda). Mayor Charles Gosling spoke briefly, thanking HSBC and Bill Ming for adding to the public art that is steadily appearing throughout the City of Hamilton.
Philip Butterfield, CEO of HSBC (Bermuda) gave a few remarks just before he and Bill Ming unveiled the artwork. After the unveiling, guests were invited to go across to HSBC’s Harbourview Centre where there is a display of several other works of art created by Bill Ming.
Mr Ming made the original work in his studio in the UK. The moulding was also made in the UK and then shipped to China where the bronze sculpture was actually poured and formed. After that the finished sculpture was shipped to Miami, and from Miami it was shipped to Bermuda, where it was handed over to BCM McAlpine and HSBC.
The Bermuda team was project manager Peter Richens from HSBC; and from BCM McAlpine there were John Richardson, Chris Lane, and Jonathan Darrell.
The BCM team made the wooden form into which the concrete for the plinth was poured and transported that form to Front Street. On a rain soaked day, they poured the concrete base. After that they oversaw the setting into place of Bill Ming’s sculpture. They were present today to see the end of this team effort.

All this money for a statue. Thanks HSBC, their isn’t ANY families here on the island that could have used that money to feed their families or anything..
I love, love, love Bill Ming’s works of art. Thank you HSBC for sharing with the Bermuda community. And most especially Mr. Ming for your inspirational and beautiful works! Congratulations and all the best.
Uh HSBC is one of the most gracious companies that donate…besides art is a form of culture and heritage.
my comment was meant to be sarcastic, as this is what certain people complain about every time someone tries to do something that benefits the community. the people that protest for the environment are suppose to be protesting about crime, the charity that feeds children breakfast is scolded for not teaching parents to feed their own children breakfast.
