Apocalypse When? Judgement Day Postponed

May 22, 2011

JudgementdayThe end seemingly isn’t nigh.

Despite widely publicised claims issued by the 89-year-old California evangelical broadcaster Harold Camping, the Biblical Judgement Day did not come to pass yesterday [May 21].

As part of a multi-million dollar publicity campaign sponsored by Mr. Camping and his followers, supporters of his End Times prediction visited Bermuda earlier this year [pictured] to warn locals they believed the beginning of the end was almost at hand.

Almost 30 proponents of Mr. Camping’s apocalyptic vision took to the streets of Hamilton, handing out leaflets and CD-ROMS to passers-by outlining the retired civil engineer’s Biblical scholarship and the calculations he had used to determine the supposed date of Doomsday.

Mr. Camping previously wrote a book in 1994 which predicted the end of the world that year.

“I hurriedly wrote a book, ’1994′, but I put a question mark after it,” he said after the Biblical Armageddon failed to take place then.

An outspoken critic of Mr. Camping, US Southern Baptist Seminary president Albert Mohler says two Bible verses actually forbid Christians to claim the knowledge of such dates and times.

“Christ specifically admonished his disciples not to claim such knowledge,” Mr. Mohler wrote in his blog. “In Acts 1:7, Jesus said, ‘It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority.’

“He said in Matthew 24:36, Christ taught similarly: ‘But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only’ …”

Mr. Mohler said it is the task of Christians to share the Gospel and live faithful Christians lives.

“The church is not to be arrogantly setting dates, but instead to be eagerly waiting for him [Jesus Christ] to return,” he wrote.

But billboards guaranteeing Armageddon would begin on Saturday were put up around the world by followers of Mr. Camping, who donated an estimated $100 million over the past seven years and travelled over the United States as well as to countries like Bermuda to alert people of the coming End Times.

Mr. Camping’s Oakland, California-based Family Radio, with 66 radio stations across the globe, continued to broadcast prerecorded gospel talk shows on Saturday although its website was down. The evangelist’s California home was deserted on Saturday, and he was not answering his phone.

Mr. Camping, the president of a popular Christian broadcasting company Family Radio, had made numerous public announcements that on May 21, 2011, 200 million people would be lifted into heaven. Meanwhile a series of earthquakes which would make the devastating recent Japanese temblor “look like a Sunday school picnic in comparison” would strike various parts of the world, marking the beginning of Armageddon.

Those left behind, he said, would suffer an unending series of natural disasters until October 21, 2011 when the world would be totally destroyed.

Although Mr. Camping has been denounced countless times – by Christian, Muslim and Jewish leaders as well as atheists – he continued to state that “without any shadow of a doubt it is going to happen.”

Mr. Camping claimed to have based his prediction on Bible verses. Combining Genesis 7:4 ["Seven days from now I will send rain on the earth"] and 2 Peter 3:8 [“With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day”], he came to the conclusion that Judgement Day -– May 21, 2011 -– would occur 7000 years after the supposed date of the Great Flood [4990 B.C.].

4990 + 2011 – 1 = 7000 [the subtraction of “1” from the equation is due to the fact that there is no year 0 between 1 B.C. and 1 A.D.].

However, nothing that signified Mr. Camping’s End Time prediction occurred.

Comedian Stephen Colbert, currently taking part in the Charleston Bermuda race which got underway on Saturday, joked “There is a cult out there that believes the world is coming to an end on May 21, so that’s one of the reasons I wanted to be out in the ocean. I’ll have nothing above me and I’ll fly straight up.”

  1. I am very sad for those who have been following this lie that the rapture was to occur on May 21st. Hopefully, they should now admit that “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven nor the Son, but only the Father” (Mark 13:32). Every Christian, theologian, scholar, and prophet from the first Century until the Nineteenth Century all believed that the church would go through the Great Tribulation and not escape through some secret rapture that would leave the world completely paralyzed. I pray that they now will take a moment and read through my book, “Final Warning” to help them to stand firm in their faith because the hour of is His judgment has come. http://www.revelation-truth.org

    • Just trying to get money. says:

I see what you did there. “my book” meaning, you’re posting to get people to buy your book, as poor saps did his. And proceeded to spend their entire life savings, and quit their job in order to live out their lives happily till the rapture (yesterday) and now are broke, jobless and homeless.

Lets just all hope when you foretell the end of the world, you don’t end up making a bunch of people broke, homeless, and jobless as well. My advice would be to not buy or look at your book The world will be better with out it.

    • Jose says:

Are you advertising your “final warning” crap? Thanks god I don`t believe in God…

    • Rockfish#1 and#2 says:

“Read through my book” Is it free? You should be ashamed of yourself, exploiting gullible people for financial gain. Just like Camping!!!

  3. Watch & Enjoy says:

One of the downsides of Freedom of Speech…more people should exercise their rights to remain silent.

  4. Derek Simons says:

Just a bunch of BULL S*****RS who the hell are they to be judging ANYTHING. There is only ONE MAN that can do that and when he is ready it will just happen.

    • WhiteChrist aka White Jesus says:

I sincerely hope that G-d is anything BUT a man!

  5. No God says:

What said rapture was a bust?

I am now writing in heaven. Rapture came and gone. It is just that Camping and his cronies were not saved. Isn’t that obvious?

Jokes aside, there probably is no god. Relax and just live a good and honest life.

  6. WhiteChrist aka White Jesus says:

    Evangelist nutballs!

  7. TJ says:

I feel as if you shouldn’t knock someone for something the believe in, because i’m sure there are a lot of religions who think theirs is the one you should follow. I think we should have respect for all religions. Its up to each individual if the choose to belive in something or not. Ultimatley we all should get ready for his return, whether it be today, tomorrow, next year, we don’t know, but we should get ready. I’m happy to see that Something postive did come out of all of this, he has brought this to our attention and we are all now aware of His second comming.

    • sandgrownan says:

      Why?

      • reality check says:

i really don’t think that the question that should be asked is why. sure TJ was commenting from a Christian standpoint but as a realist its always best to live a positive lifestyle whether you’re Christian, Athiest, or whatever. When have you ever seen something done in negativity gain something positive back? No we don’t know when the world is to end and clearly we’re not meant to know but we shold at least try to do our best to behave our best because it’s the right thing to do, whether you believe there is a God to answer to or not.

    • This is crazy says:

I completely believe in freedom of religion, but I dont believe that any religion should be pushing their beliefs on me. I dont need to go to church to believe. Anyways, I think it’s horrible that someone would try to say they can predict then end of the world. No one will know when its going to happen, it will just happen. Last I knew it was supposed to happen on my birthday 12-21-12, which I highly doubt. Believe in what you want but only the gullible people will follow.

  8. Danny Haszard says:

Watchtower Jehovah’s Witnesses have lost credibility with their own *Millerite Math* doctrine of Jesus ‘invisible’ second coming October 1914.
Watchtower society false prophets declare Armageddon end of world in 1874, 1878, 1881, 1910, 1914, 1918, 1925, 1975, and 1984….—Danny Haszard been there!

  9. JamesJust says:

Thanks a lot you false prophet!!! You have created the worst deception in Christian history. You have fulfilled prophecy, but not the prophecy you wanted to fulfill.

Once the Heavenly duo of of Swans leave the nest then it shall come to pass that the time is nigh.

As you can see, I have been correct. As was written in Genesis….”He who goeth ‘Camping with a Swan shall bring the straw to the camel and break it’s back’…

He-thans the lot. Thats why Eve ate the apple…Adam was a wuss………

    • United says:

All the evidence of the abundant GOOD the PLP has done for the lovely island. Yes, the end of Bermuda as the world knew it started when the PLP took over. Just saying. Now, because I said that I GUARANTEE I will be labeled a racist.

      • WhiteChrist aka White Jesus says:

        If the shoe fits…………

        • United says:

And you’re a racist! See how easy it is for labeling? No need to debate just sling out the names. If anybody disagrees with a black person, it is automatic that that person is racist. Not because he/she may have a good point or proof. No, automatically racist. Pathetic. And that’s how I baited it and sure enough.

Any organisation preaching false hopes and instilling fear into peoples mind’s should be shut down, prosecuted for crimes against humanity and false advertising. Maybe then will the world wake up to the real problems at hand

      Not all Christians.

  13. Evan says:

Harold camping should be put in jail for what he did now the tax payers will have to pay for the numerous amount of people that quit there jobs and also people that sucked therenlife savings into this cause. This is a very terrible thing and I wonder what this fake prophet will say next

    • lol says:

Tax payers wont pay crap. You don’t see us paying billions of dollars for every other person you see rotting on the street.

    • This is crazy says:

Hopefully he’ll be in jail where he belongs. Let’s see if god picks him up from there….

  14. MikeC says:

    You spelled judgment wrong.

  15. Nicole says:

Ah religion the best thing to control, confuse and sucker people. His end of the world will be coming soon anyway. 89 years old and still scamming people. SMH. Surely the Lord wouldn’t approve of that.

  16. bernews says:

No we didn’t spell judgement incorrectly. In British English, the spelling “judgment” is correct when referring to a court’s or judge’s formal ruling, whereas the spelling “judgement” is used for other meanings — including “Judgement Day”. “Judgment” tends to be used in American English in both the legal and wider contexts.

    • W.T.F.??? says:

      Bernews spelling IS Correct!

    • WhiteChrist aka White Jesus says:

      You get those nit-pickers Bernews!

    • reality check says:

Go get ‘em Bernews! all the mouth in the world with no credible knowledge to back it up smh

  17. Pussy cat says:

If they follow the true teaching of the bible that they believe in they would know the truth. This is probably just another ploy to take advantage of people and possible get their money. I am not sure but bible doctrine is clear and it never changes.

    • Rockfish#1 and#2 says:

Dont think so! If you put the leaders of the the most prominent Christian denominations in a room with a truckload of bibles,(there are several versions) it is unlikely that they will agree on much. They will have their own opinions and interpretations which they pass on to their flock. Hell,(no pun intended) they will not even agree on which day the bible says is the correct one on which they should worship!

  18. United says:

Next end of the world I am going to look for these cooks and ask that I take over their bank accounts.

  19. Observing the Weak says:

They might aswell change April fools day to May 21st fools day. I saw so much people on the bus and train with bibles in their hands on friday, I think I was the only one in the carriage that didnt. Listening to my i-pod and reading a Cosmopolitan magazine, I guess in all honesty, they must have thought I was strange.

People should never believe in these things, unless that see the jesus riding on a cloud declaring its judgement day. Until then….Plese keep your end of the world comments to yourself, becuase im not buying into anything.
