[Updated] Yesterday [June 11] the 2011 Bermuda Track and Field Association’s National Championships concluded at the National Sports Center.

Teenage sprinter Jeneko Place won both the 100m and 200m, with the later being a highly anticipated match up between the island’s two top sprinters; Jeneko Place and Tre Houston. Although racing in two different age groups, on a timed basis Jeneko Place’s 21.87 just piped Tre Houston’s 22.21.

BTFA President Donna Watson said, “The BTFA had 2 beautiful days of track & field for the National Championships. This was a well attended event and some phenomenal performances by our athletes.”

“The is first time we have incorporated a 10k road race and it was not as well attended as we would like but it added a great addition to the championships and I am sure it will continue to grow. We had athletes who performed PBs and qualified for some of the International events. We had over 160 athletes compete and 41 compete in the 10k.”

“The outstanding performances were Kyrah Scraders winning the 400, 800 & 1500m in the 14 and under age group. Shaquille Dill winning the 400 & 800 in great times of 48.54 and 1:53.08. Justin Donawa jumped a PB in the Triple jump with a leap of 13.70.”

“Bruce DeGrilla jumped a PB in the Long Jump with a leap of 7.08 which would have won him gold in stead of silver in the Carifta Games and was just outside of the qualifying standard of 7.15m for the World Youth Championships. Kyle Webb ran a PB in the 100m in a time of 11.12 which would have qualified him for the World Youth Championships but it was just over the legal wind limit of 2.0 but he has already qualified in the 200m.”
