2011 Miss Bermuda To Be Selected Tonight
This evening [June 12] will mark the first time since 1997 that a new Miss Bermuda will be crowned.
Under the direction of Milika Trott-Seymour, the pageant was brought back from its hiatus and sixteen young ladies entered the contest, who have been busy over the past few weeks both preparing for tonight’s pageant, and making appearances around the island.
On June 5th the Miss Bermuda contestants participated in a photo shoot with five of the island’s professional photographers. Thoe photos, along with the photographer’s individual evaluation, will be used to select the winner of the Miss Photogenic Title, which will be announced tonight.
On May 27th the contestants joined Hamilton’s unofficial greeter Johnny Barnes at the Crow Lane roundabout, waving and smiling at drivers during rush hour. Pictured below left to right is Davika Hill, Jasmine Simmons, Jana Lynn Outerbridge, Sharmaine Landy, Rachel Sawden, Alisha Phillips, Deonae Dickinson, Davina Cannonier, Cratonia Smith and Kylah Burch.
On May 23th, the contestants took part in the Bermuda Day Parade. Pictured below is Sharmaine Landy, representing Hamilton Parish West, and Rachel Sawden, representing Hamilton Parish South:
On May 14th, the contestants toured Bermuda with comedian Nadanja Bailey their ‘tour guide’ for the afternoon. Pageant Director Milika Trott-Seymour said, “Often as Bermudians we don’t take time out of our busy schedules and appreciate how beautiful our home is, so that’s what we will be doing, taking time to appreciate Bermuda.”
The contestants teamed up with StyleBermuda.com for a ‘Style War‘, in which each contestant selected a denim outfit of their own choosing, and the model receiving the most votes for her ‘denim style’ will be announced during the show this evening. There were 12 contestants in total in the ‘Style War’, some of which appear below:
On April 30, the contestants attended the Lindo’s Island Soccer League [ISL] Superdraft, which was held at the Fairmont Southampton. The ladies are seen below with Lindo’s Island Soccer League Commissioner David Bascome, and Director of Media Relations, Paul Mittermeier.
On April 3rd, the Elbow Beach Hotel, a sponsor of the Miss Bermuda Pageant, played host to the contestants as they took part in a swimsuit photo session with well known local photographer Anthony Francis of Tekoa Photography. The make-up was by Chrysalis, with hair styling done by Impressions.
On March 27, the Miss Bermuda contestants spent the afternoon serving attendees at the Seniors Tea at Cedarbridge Academy. The invitation-only ‘Hat and Gloves Tea’ tea marked the conclusion of the month long celebration of International Women’s Day, with this year marking the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day.
The Pageant is making a comeback after being on hiatus since the 1997, when Joanne Darrell won the crown. The winner tonight will go on to represent Bermuda at the Miss World Pageant, which will be held on 8th November 2011, in London, England.
Miss Bermuda winners from the past have done quite well on an international level; Gina Swainson won the Miss World Pageant in 1979 [video], Zina Minks made the top 15 in the 1980 Miss World Pageant [video], and 41 years ago Margaret Hill won the Miss Photogenic award at the 1970 Miss Universe [photo] – becoming of the first group of black women to capture major international beauty titles.
