BWS: Gale Force Winds Expected

[Updated] The Bermuda Weather Service [BWS] issued a Gale Warning, Thunderstorm Advisory and Small Craft Warning for today [Dec.18].

In the forecast discussion meteorologist Michelle Pitcher said, “Gale force winds are expected to develop late this evening and will become strong gales late tonight as a vigorous post-frontal trough brushes by to our north.”

“Models have very cold air [543 thickness in UK] arriving late tonight into Monday morning. This will bring unseasonably cool temperatures to the area which will feel cooler with the gale force winds.

“A small craft warning is in effect for this morning through this evening. A gale warning is in effect for late this evening through Monday morning. A thunderstorm advisory is in effect for late this morning through this evening.”

Update: St. George’s Olde Towne Market scheduled for this afternoon is cancelled, however the organizers said they hope to have another market before Christmas.

Update #2: The ‘Sandys Parish Council Winter Wonderland’ scheduled for this evening in Somerset has been cancelled. They will switch lights on at 5:30 tonight, and have tentatively rescheduled activities for Tuesday at 6:00 pm.

Update Dec 19, 9am: The BWS has removed the Thunderstorm Advisory, however the Gale Warning and Small Craft Warning remain in effect.

The forecast this morning said, “Gales will continue through this morning, with strong winds this afternoon and then rapidly easing winds overnight. Occasional showers will decrease to few by this afternoon and then continue to decrease into Tuesday.”
