Bermudians welcomed in 2012 at public events in Hamilton and St. George’s last night [Dec.31], with revellers thronging the streets of both municipalities for live entertainment and Onion drops to mark midnight.

The dropping of an illuminated  Bermuda onion is a uniquely local contribution to New Year festivities, first introduced at the East End 17 years ago.  It has become such a well-established local institution it inspired the coastal town of Easton, Maryland to introduce its own New Year Crab drop.

The East End event was held in the Town Square, and featured a mechanical bull ride, bouncy castles, live musical entertainment, dance performances, a dazzling laser light show, artwork projected onto buildings and more.

The Hamilton event, hosted by Spanish Town, was held at No.1 Car Park on Front Street, and featured an outdoor film screening, fun castles, live local entertainers, vendors, and a spectacular fireworks display over Hamilton Harbour right after the dropping of the Onion Ball at midnight.
