Daren Herbert Play Opens In Vancouver

February 14, 2012

The curtain has gone up on the latest Canadian theatrical production featuring Bermuda actor Daren Herbert – a Vancouver revival of Lynn Nottage’s hit Off-Broadway play “Intimate Apparel.”

Being staged by British Columbia’s Arts Club Theatre Company, the largest theatrical company in Western Canada and one which helped to launch the careers of such stars as Michael J. Fox, “Intimate Apparel” began previews last Thursday [Feb. 9] at its Granville Island production centre. The show runs until March 10.

“Intimate Apparel” is a richly textured love story. It’s 1905. New York City. 35-year-old Esther [Marci T. House] is an independent African-American woman who makes a good living sewing exquisite undergarments and corsets for brides-to-be. But she yearns to wear one of her own creations.

When a mysterious stranger from the Caribbean [Daren Herbert] strikes up a pen-pal relationship, the romance that blooms promises to fulfill all her dreams.

“Lynn Nottage is one of the leading playwrights in American theatre today,” said Bill Millerd, the Arts Club Theatre Company’s artistic managing director. “But until now her work has not seen a full professional production in Vancouver. ‘Intimate Apparel’ is the perfect introduction to Nottage’s outstanding body of work.”

A graduate of the Yale University School of Drama, Intimate Apparel writer Ms Nottage is a critically lauded playwright whose works are wide-ranging, from a musical for children to a play about the plight of Congolese women admidst civil war.

For the latter, “Ruined”, she earned the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In 2007 she was awarded a MacArthur Genius Grant and cited as “a dramatist who will continue to provide us with provocative plays in which her characters confront some of society’s most complex issues.” 2004 saw the Off-Broadway premiere of “Intimate Apparel”, starring Viola Davis.

Primarily based in British Columbia, Warwick Academy graduate Mr. Herbert juggles theatrical, television and movie work.

He has appeared in such films as the Oscar-winning  musical “Dream Girls” and the cult comedy classic “Hot Tub Time Machine” and last year was cast alongside Reese Witherspoon in an upcoming romantic comedy.

At Christmas Mr. Herbert played a New Jersey detective in the TNT made-for-TV movie “Deck The Halls,” a lighthearted mystery based on the novel by mother-and-daughter suspense writers Mary Higgins Clark and Carol Higgins Clark.
