Post-Tropical Storm Leslie Summary Points

For those who would rather not sift through all the Tropical Storm Leslie updates, a brief summary of important points is below.

Weather

  • The Emergency Measures Organisation has given the ‘all clear’ as of 6pm
  • Leslie is moving away from the island with weather conditions expected to continue to improve.
  • A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect
  • Leslie’s closet point of approach to Bermuda has passed, it is now 190 miles away
  • Hazardous surf and rip currents will continue into Monday

Infrastructure

  • No major damage reported
  • The Ministry of Public Works has inspected roads and report no issues
  • The Causeway remained open through the entire storm
  • Motorists are asked to to report any debris or obstructions to 295 0011.
  • BELCO has restored power to most customers, and expect that repairs can be completed tonight with the exception of two commercial customers with underground cable faults. Last number given was 239 customers down, but that was at 7.30pm.
  • The City of Hamilton confirmed that all City services will return to normal on Monday

Transportation

  • The EMO said buses resumed service at 5.30pm today [unofficial sources dispute this]
  • Ferries will be suspended on Monday while the fleet and docks are inspected
  • Update on ferry service to be give by noon tomorrow
  • Following a brief closure the airport resumed operations at 6pm this evening
  • Most airlines cancelled their flights for today, but British Airways landed at 7.15pm
  • American Airlines has cancelled both their 8.15am flight to Miami and their 9.30am flight to New York tomorrow morning
  • The cruise ship Norweigan Star delayed their arrival in Bermuda, expected to arrive Tuesday
  • The Oleander container ship will be at sea buoy 8.30 Monday morning. Bermuda Pilots will be surveying the channel first thing in the morning to make sure it is safe for her arrival.

Schools/Employment

  • Public schools will open for principals and teachers on Monday and students will return on Tuesday
  • The Education Ministry said the school days lost will be made up later in the school year
  • Government offices will be open on Monday morning
  • Capital G Bank and Gibbons Company will open tomorrow morning
  • Mount Saint Agnes school will be open tomorrow
  • Bermuda College will resume its normal class schedule and business operations on Monday
  • At last check [Thursday] Saltus and BHS said they would close on Monday. We have not yet been able to officially confirm if the plans are the same, however we spoke with a couple of parents of both Saltus and BHS students who said they have not been notified of any changes to the plans to be closed on Monday.

    We regularly get winter storms that are far worse than this one, and schools and businesses don’t close for two days. There’s a point where precaution turns into laziness. Kids, get back in school!

    Love the Ber News articles which are going crazy on Facebook…the story above tells of the Bermuda bus servive suspended, the story directly below of how British Airways will maintain a normal service.

    I guess some guys use common sense, and put the effort in, and not for the first time the Bermuda Bus Service are a public joke. Its ok, there were no tourists here to ignore anyway.
