Shooting In Warwick, Two Men Injured

November 20, 2012

[Updated - There was a shooting in Warwick at around 9.15pm this evening, and two men -- aged 19 and 20 --  were injured, and their injuries are not believed to be life threatening]

At around 9.15pm this evening [Nov 20] there was a shooting in the Khyber Pass area of Warwick, and unofficial reports indicate that at least one person has been injured, possibly two. Emergency personnel have arrived on the scene. Details are limited at this time, however we will update as able.

Update 9.49pm: The police can be seen in large amounts on Khyber Heights Road, as well as an ambulance. There is a bike laying in the road in the area the police are, whether that is is related or not is unclear at this time.

Update 9.55pm: One person – a young man — has been placed in the ambulance, which left the scene at 9.55pm. To our layman’s view he did not appear to be critically injured, and appeared to have sustained wound[s] to his leg.

Update 10.01pm: Area residents report hearing multiple gunshots.

Update 10.17pm: Unofficial reports continue to indicate that two people may have been shot, although we have yet not confirmed that. The police are putting up crime scene tape in the area

Update 10.29pm: Police confirm two men [19 and 20 years old] have been shot, and their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Update 11.29pm: Quick video of the ambulance leaving, and Police Media Manager Dwayne Caines.

Update 11.50pm: It is not quite clear whether the two men were shot at the exact same location, or whether the two men were shot in slightly different locations. The police appeared to be focusing on two different areas, and we saw one shooting victim transported away to hospital, but did not see the other one being taken away. A bike [photo] could be seen laying on the ground in one area the police were investigating.

Update Nov 21, 12.46pm: The OBA’s Jeff Baron briefly addressed the shooting at today’s press conference.

This is the third firearm incident this month, following after incidents on Nov.7 and Nov.4 which both occurred in Southampton and involved gun shots being fired without anyone being injured.  Anyone with any information about this incident can contact the main police telephone number on 295-0011 or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.

Update Nov 21, 5pm: The police have issued an official statement.

Around 9:15pm on Tuesday 20th November 2012, police officers responded to reports of gunshots in the Khyber Heights Lane, Warwick area. Initial inquiries revealed that two men from Pembroke parish attended the area on a motorcycle and an altercation occurred. Both Pembroke men aged 19 and 20 years sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment. Their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

The Bermuda Police Service would like to thank all members of the public that assisted the victims after they were shot and injured. On arrival police officers assisted with providing first aid to the victims, in addition to locating and securing the crime scene for collection of possible evidence. A number of area residents and potential witnesses were also spoken to by police in an attempt to better ascertain the circumstances of the shootings as well as provide community reassurance.

Detectives from the Serious Crime Unit are conducting a full investigation into this confirmed firearm incident and have not ruled out the possibility that it may be gang related. Any witnesses or persons with any information, particularly anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the Khyber Heights Lane, Warwick area around the time of the shooting, is encouraged to contact the Serious Crime Unit on 247-1739 or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.

  5. Yanzie says:

It just gets worse and worse until we are just like America

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Nope. Already far worse than the worst US city. Outside of cities it is not uncommon to hear gunshots. The difference is the source is most likely a shotgun or some other long barrel i.e. somebody out hunting. No one thinks anything about hearing that kind of gunfire.

When was the last time a Minister trotted out in front of microphones to express disgust at the lawlessness here?

      • jredmond says:

no it’s not, stop exaggerating. It sucks, but it’s still far safer in Bermuda than many metropolitan areas.

        • Zombie Apocalypse says:

Bermuda’s murder rate is higher than most US metropolitan districts.

        • Bermuda Girl says:

No. Bermuda is more dangerous than most US cities. You have to look at size, population, etc. Murders are DOWN in the US; UP in Bermuda. Proportionately, Bermudians need to be very pro-active right about now, before Bermuda does become a 22 mile long ghetto, run by wannabees and fueled by fear.

      • Ryan says:

This is exaggerating. I live in New York currently and, although I do not live in an unsafe area, gunshots—and crime—are frequent.

Bermuda is too small for this silliness, however.

        • D Jones says:

Per population it is far more dangerous here than in U.S. Read the stats and do the math. You’ll be shocked at how Bermuda ranks!

          • Triangle Drifter says:

Ding Ding Ding!!! Finally, somebody who can do some math.

          • Plato says:

Stats dont always reflect reality if you lived here you would know this, if your not in the “streets” you dont have anything to worry about that is not the case for any major city especially in America where GUNS ARE LEGAL AND ANYONE CAN OWN A FIREARM and thats all of my time you lames are getting.

            • D Jones says:

I lived in Chicago for 40+ years and disagree. I slept with windows open and wouldn’t dream of doing that here. Secondly, if you live anywhere on this Island, you are not safe from gunfire. A 9mm round fired from chest high will travel over 2 miles before it drops to the ground. You are the one rooting comments in fantasy and emotion. You can’t fix a problem until you admit to having one, and believe the stats…you have one.

              • Free says:

Are you kidding me? Chicago? The place that has one of the highest murder rates in America? You all exaggerate so much. Yes Bermuda is smaller but we are still safer. Little kids aren’t grabbed and kidnapped out of stores. Women aren’t raped and murdered then thrown in bushes and random innocent people aren’t robbed and murdered which is a daily occurrence in almost every city in America.

      • Plato says:

No its not my god Bernews can you sensor some of these insane comments last time i was in any major city the headlines were far worse with heinous crimes being committed weekly please keep the comments rooted in reality not fantasy.

    • Mike says:

      agreed!

  6. Lord let this madness stop says:

COWARDS, COWARDS! They have to hide behind a gun!

  7. O$% SETUP says:

    —–

Maybe a puppet show, illustrating a typical shooting in Bermuda, may deter these actions……MAYBE, if the PLP put as much time into running an island as they do winning an election we’d be in a better spot…..just maybe..

    • diva says:

Oh come on!!! WTH does this have to do with the government or an election?!? Maybe if some of the families that are housing these hooligans, knowing what they are into, would stop doing it, THAT would provide an initial solution. Stop putting the blame on government and their “running of the country”! Start calling people out on how they “run” and allow the crap in their homes! Until that is done, you will see no improvement, no matter how the laws may be changed!

      • Blurt says:

If you can’t correlate the rise in gangs with the reduction in opportunities, the deterioration of Education and Leaders and ministers sticking their finger up at accountability then open your eyes. Yes the parents are at fault, the youngsters are at fault too. When you have nothing to lose …………

      • Wheerzs Waldo? says:

I agree with you DIVA. When families look the other way and have “not my child” syndrome the problems don’t go away. When neighbours see what is going on “next door” or “down the road” and don’t report it, the problem gets worse. If you ignore an ongoing problem and pretend it does not exist – it will get worse. Politics has little to do with what is going on in BDA.

      • Seriously??? says:

        Well said Diva.

      • Blu topaz says:

Would you run your child into police if your rent was getting paid. Travel expenses paid. Money in your pocket. Probley not… But let’s put a twist to it maybe just maybe these families r afraid of these young men. If they have no heart in shooting another human being then I doubt if they would care who they shot family or not.

        • DontCareBoutUrResponse says:

          I TOTALLY AGREE!

          • New Norm says:

Too true!! That is exactly what is going on here in Bermy. Some of the parents don’t have jobs any more and rely on the money their criminal kid gives them. It’s sad. Maybe when their son is the one murdered they’ll realize how wrong they have been. Sad all around.

      • Mad Dawg says:

Jonathan Smith says it’s to do with the government. He’s a PLP candidate, in case you don’t know.

      • redbone says:

It all boils down to the lack of respect….what ever happened to it takes a village to raise a child/children? Children only know what they are taught and there is no1 teaching/showing them the facts of life! This is why brothers are killing brothers and cousins killing cousins

    • F*ckery says:

      Everythings a joke…

This is nothing to joke about!!

  9. Plato says:

  12. D1 says:

Another shooting hope its none of my peoples..

  13. 50cent says:

everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die

  14. I heard those shots says:

I heard the shots clear as day. It was more roughly 8-10 shots fired. I first heard three, a few shorts seconds of silence, then an additional 2-3 followed by 2-4 more. I couldn’t believe it at first but having lived in the US for 20 years and firing multiple guns I knew and recognized he distinctive sound

  15. Ryan says:

And while the PLP plays with puppets and searches for “secret plans,” young men are getting lost to gangs and shot in the streets.

People may say politicizing this is inappropriate, but the simple fact is that the government has presided over this social degeneration, and, indirectly, they must take some responsibility for it.

    • F*@kery says:

PLP this Government that…stfu please and thank you. These shootings are way bigger than the raggedy a*s party in parliament.

    • tricks are for kids says:

      @ Ryan…
Please explain….life is about CHOICES and there is just a small group of individuals CHOOSING to live this rogue lifestyle….we are ALL living under the reign of the current government BUT we are all NOT partaking in this foolishness….so again I ask please explain…

      • Ryan says:

I understand that, and please understand that I feel for those affected. But it is the government’s responsibility to look after its people and respond to its needs.

Life is about choices, but your choices are affected by your environment, and that influence, for some, is pervasive. I’ll explain simply: a poor economy, coupled with poor public education leads to unemployment. Unemployment results in social degeneration which, inevitably, leads to crime.

The government *does* have a role to play in this, and I pray that measures will be taken to stop our youth from falling to these social ills. But, as yet, the government has been slow to respond, and so they reap what they sow.

Again, I feel for this young men affected by this. I only wish the government felt the same way.

        • Da plumber says:

If you look at the age of these young people they are 20 + yrs ole the education that you are talking about happened pre 1998 so to blame the current gov is almost unfair these people shooting each other are in a hole different frame of mind they are angry at something but the gov is not the blame

          • Ryan says:

Perhaps, but, I imagine, would these young men be killing one another if they had jobs? Youth unemployment is staggeringly high, so it any wonder that these men are resorting to crime to make ends meet?

The best societal healers are jobs and education.

For what it’s worth, these two men would have been 6-8 years-old pre-1998.

          • Not Quite says:

That isn’t completely accurate. The first cohort to enter middle school under the current education system (which was developed by the UBP and implemented by the PLP, so the blame is shared) are now 27-28 years old. Thus persons in their late teens and early 20s were fully entrenched in the current educational mess. In any event, both governments had a role in this present system so from that perspective, it isn’t accurate to blame the PLP exclusivey.

            • Yes Aye says:

Not like it is relvant to the story, but middle school was implemented in ’96, before plp came to power.

              • Blurt says:

The collapse in quality of education for the last 15 year, the rape of opportunities and the denial of responsibility and accountability by the ministers and leader is all down to the PLP. They say education has improved, but won’t release the results, they say they are training for menial jobs, but won’t give us the numbers who are newly employed or have retained employment since their training (exclude the internationally paid for drywallers, as all but one were already employed) and PATI still hasn’t gone through as promised. The tone at the top is reflected in this generation of gangs, i.e. do what I want , how I want, when I want regardless of the laws, rules , ethical implications and cost to society.

        • tricks are for kids says:

Ryan again I say we are ALL living under these same conditions and if you want to break it down into age brackets it’s not ALL 20 30 or 40 year olds…it’s only SOME of them…and YES they were shooting at each other BEFORE all of this unemployment…..accountability starts with ones self . ..no one is accountable for YOUR actions but you ..

          • Ryan says:

Of course not! Listen, I love Bermuda, and so of course I am not saying that it is the majority of youth participating in this nonsense.

HOWEVER, because we do not have an environment that encourages good education and job growth, *more people*—but not the majority—are susceptible and are falling into this antisocial behavior.

We need to take steps, together, to ensure that this does not happen to *any* of our youth, and government has a role in this.

            • Yes Aye says:

Come on Ryan, comanies set up here every month.

Stop buying into the OBA nonsense.

Crime and violence should be apolitical, but I’m sure we know who will exploit this tragic incident.

Cue Jeff Baron before a mic.

              • Blurt says:

Didn’t you see the graph showing the exempt comanies….. Was ugly…. Shame you can’t erase your last post.

            • tricks are for kids says:

Young men CHOOSING to do the wrong thing
..ACCOUNTABILTY! Let’s place the blame where it rightfully belongs….at the feet of the individuals….

        • Just Us says:

@ Ryan: What the F are you talking about… The Government has no play in the BS going on…. This gun slinging has been boiling up for almost some 30 years now, it’s just come to the point where these younger fools are being played as the puppets to go out and use these guns on others. Ain’t nobody done nothing to the ones doing the shooting, their the dumb ones taking orders and the cycle will continue for years to come. All these young people are pretty much related but the sad part about all of this is, anyone who chooses to associate within that circle will be looked upon as one of those. I have friends who are going on 50 yrs old and are period about traveling to various parts of the Island because of their past encounters with others. We fail to realize that one hand washes the other…

  16. I Love Bermy says:

@ Yanzie – We are already like America …. Bermy’s shootings are just on a smaller scale …. But the question is: How often are we going to be seeing these shootings? In my opinion, these shootings are not going to stop…. I feel that they are just going to become more and more frequent as time goes on and I don’t think that the Police have a proper hold of the situation.

  17. M.P.Mountbatten JP says:

This can’t be easy for the parent’s or the relations of the young men who were shot !! I pray that the gunman will be caught before he kills .

  18. tired says:

@diva…i agree. I get so tired of people saying stupid comments on these blogs just because they can hide behind a fake name. Government isnt responsible for everything negative that happens on this island, so folks just need to chill out. There are a lot of families out there benefiting from illegal money so they look the other way when they know what their kids are up to. Turn them in and you will see how quickly this island becomes the wonderful place it used to be. It’s turn them in or someone will do them in. Families or the lack thereof not Government is responsible for this island turning the way it is. This is not a time to pick on PLP nor is it time to make jokes…this is serious.

  19. Kim Smith says:

Thank you @ tricks are for kids

I think you are absolutely right… life is about the choices we make… full stop! We can’t change what we won’t acknowledge. Enough with the excuses…

  20. Mad Dawg says:

Jonathan Smith, August 8, 2012, taking full credit for crime:
“I’m glad to see we’re making steady progress bringing crime under control….We are standing strong for Bermudians by making Bermuda a safer place to live and raise a family”.

So when crime stats look good, the PLP take full credit. But when crime takes a turn for the worse, they want nothing to do with it.

    • Rockfish #1and#2 says:

      @ Mad Dawg,
Do you mean Jonathan Smith the former Commissioner of Police, the PLP candidate for a Warwick seat?

    • Yes Aye says:

Um, total crime is down. Unless you think the governor and police commissioner are fabricating crime stats!

      • Mad Dawg says:

We can debate the figures; they are not straightforward. The other point though is that if PLP take credit for crime reduction, they have to take responsibility for crime increases.

      • Y-Gurl says:

Total crime is not down, solved crime is down

      • Zombie Apocalypse says:

“My concern, as with the Government and the community, is that gun violence continues to escalate”.
        Said Marc Bean, yesterday.

I’m glad to see we’re making steady progress bringing crime under control….We are standing strong for Bermudians by making Bermuda a safer place to live and raise a family”. Said Jonathan Smith, in August.

Looks like Mr Bean and Jonathan Smith see things entirely differently.

Which one of them is a liar?

  25. Smh says:

I blame Sheila Cooper and the former Govt of BDA the UBP for taking the power of correcting your own children away. How does a person who didn’t even raise there own children have the authority to impose a rule & get the backing of a “WHITE SUPREMEST” Govt to back it? It’s all apart of the system seek & u shall find. Black people of BDA put the alcohol drugs & mind altering substances down & seek the Knowledge that is out there, it’s all by design & we are just falling for it day by day. I was taught many years ago “if you don’t want Black people to know & learn something put it in a book” so to my people once you know where we as a people come from you will never know were we are going. There is a book called the “Isis Papers” read it & all of what’s happening today & what will happen tomorrow has already been told! The Mind is a Terrible thing to Waste. “One Love”

  26. Young Teacher says:

Am tired of you all blaming the government for these gang related problems on the island. Firstly if you have worked in the school system in Bermuda and seen others around the world their is nothing wrong with our public education system. Our young man and women feel education is useless and refuse to do what they need to do. Therefore they resort to easy money and a hard life style. These ones committing these acts chose not to finish school when every opportunity was given to them. Stop blaming the government and stop blaming everyone period and let’s stand up as a community and work with our youth instead of putting them down and uplift them and make them feel relevant. Before you all say its this persons problem how many of you have taken the time to mentor someone and try and guide them to the right path when you see they don’t get it from their home. So in order to fix the problem we need to start from when their young and work together to make sure our youth are productive members of society one day.

    • bermyluv says:

“Nothing wrong…..” I beg to differ. We might not be the worst, but we should be striving to be the best or at least do better than we are. The importance of education to success in life has become a universal principle that too many take for granted. Whether free or paid, educational success often requires a curiosity on the part of the pupil, a stable family and social fabric to support the pupil, and teachers that will challenge and encourage the pupil.

I agree that government is not to blame for all of the problems. However, they lead by example with their lack of accountability that pervades every aspect of our society. Politicians, teachers, parents, friends, family, and the thugs themselves – the fault always lies with someone else.

Just think that for every person incarcerated, we spend the equivalent of a teacher’s salary or a social worker’s salary. I would rather make the investment in education (academic and social) on the front end then end up with the liability on the back end.

      • cant fool me says:

Nuffin wrong?get ur head out ur ASS!!!!EVER SINCE UBP INTRODUCED MEGA HIGHSCHOOLS N MIDDLESCHOOLS WE HAV HAD THIS PROBLEM !!!!!!One BIG SOCIAL PROBLEM WERE KIDS DNT VET TO INTERACT WITH OTHER KIDS OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL THATS CLOSEST TO THER HOME,THEN U ADD THE MEDIA HYPE IN REGARDS TO KIDS WHO HANGOUT IN THERE NEIGHBOURHOODS AS BEIN GANGSTAS THESE YOUTHS STARTED TO BY INTO IT SADLY NOW U HAVE WAT U SEE TODAY,WE TALK BOUT EDUCATION BUT TELL ME THIS WHEN CEDARBRIGE FIRST OPENED HOW MANY KIDS LEFT OR GRADUATED FRM THERE NOT EVEN HALF WAY EQUIPED FOR A BASIC JOB MUCH LESS COLLEGE ENTRY LEVEL PPL HAV SUCH BAD MEMORIES CANT REMEMBER NUFFIN WORTH REMEMBERING UNLESS ITS SOME PETTY SHIT WE NEED TO START CALLING SHIT AS IT IS AND START CALLING PPL OUT ON SHIT ELECTION IS UPON US ONE SET OF VAMPIERS WANT A JOB THE OTHER WANNA KEEP THEY JOB WHEN R WE AS PPL GONNA HOLD THESE MUPPETS ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE WAY OUR COUNTRY IS GOVERNED

        • LOL (original TM*) says:

Act like you know, gang sh$@ was happening way before mega schools they were called crews then. Difference is people knew how to act now it was at sight asd the youth got involved thanks to the older ones teaching them about their beefs……….

          LOL

          • Real Talk says:

@lOL your lost I can tell cause beef back in the day was totally different. They beefed over girls or a drug deal gone bad n they sure as hell didn’t call a crew of 20 plus guys to fix the situation. They didn’t pop people chains n all that sh*t , or shoot u cause your from another part of the island.

        • Real Talk says:

I do agree about the mega schools. If something ain’t broken why try to fix it. I’m 43 years old n I went 2 Warwick Sec , I had friends all over the island. Now I’m the mother of a 17 year old n his had the same friends since preschool. They went pre , primary , middle n high school together all of them. These same good kids hang out in the hood (as I did when I grow up) but they r labled gangters. And they get harassed just because they r from west. The former leaders of this country knew what they were doing just read between the lines. REAL TALK

    • Piper says:

I’d say that if our young men and women feel education is useless there is quite a lot wrong with our public education system …

    • Kiskadee says:

It is no wonder that the education system is heavily criticized as here we have a young teacher who can not spell .——there and their —- they’re not their .

    • skeptical says:

Nothing wrong!!! I don’t know what school you teach at but I see it from a totally different perspective. There is a lot wrong!!!

  27. watchfuleyes says:

So let me ask this, if the police ‘gang expert’ Mr.Rollins can tell us how many guys are in gangs and how many gangs there are then why can’t the police round them up? Didn’t I hear someone say a while ago that they were making it ‘ illegal to be part of a gang’? the police are either they are part of the problem, or they are scared of these guys, it can only be one of these two senarios. so wake up Bermuda nothing will end unless we put pressure on our MPs and the police to get to work. Both parties are to blame, as not every person who has gotten shot has been in ‘gangs’. It is not about education or lack thereof, but rather our black males, being victims of something bigger than themselves. Stand up Bermuda, we can fight to save trees, why can’t we stand up to save out children

    • Young Teacher says:

I couldn’t agree more with you. Let’s get out there and stop blaming education politics and everyone else. Our young Black Males need the guidance from young and show them that they are worth something in life. So let’s save our youth and stand up for our core values and instill them in our children. Go out Volunteer your services and be an impact in someones lives….Just try it and see how you can change the lives of just a few Black Males

When are the Goverment going to bring an overseas gang squad to sort this mess out for us, clearly its beyond the capabilties of the local and imported cops, the number of these incidents just keeps going up, are we waiting until they come to town with their guns before we get serious about it, the story (well reported Bernews) said at 9:55 man was put into an ambulance, what we are hoping to see today is a man put into a police car.

Just the other day at the meeting at Heron Bay School…..Mr. Perenchief said that the gun that they recentlly found was OLD but contained NEW bullets he then went on to say that, therefore shows that there are not as many guns around as one might think…..REALLY?

  30. cant fool me says:

Why not do some f$%kn crime last time i checked all the ex-convicts get employed quicker then someone coming out of college,i need to turn in my degree for a criminal record!!!!!!!!!OR BECOME A BL$%DCLOT EXPAT, look around day to day tell me if im wrong, all u f%^$#@ up Employers wanting to Invest in cheap labour n leaving good hardworking Bermudians out of work —————– !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • The Riduclist says:

@can’t fool me. agreed 100%. I see people who are prisoners who have jobs before they are released. Prime example is the KEMH. My son who has been to college gets rejected all the time. But go to hospital and bouya crimnals at your service. Somebody must be getting kickback.

  31. tessa says:

A lot of people here keep syaing this has nothing to do with politics.

    IT DOES!

Who has the power to deter these things from taking place?

How does Singapore and Thailand deal with murderers, theives, drug dealers and even people that litter? THEY GET FIRM.

So firm that people think twice before doing a crime.

The PLP has had a long time to be able to put laws in place to fight back crime.

Drug dealing? Automatic 10 year minimum and hard labour.
Firearms? Deported for 20 years and make them work in an overseas prisons. It is worth the cost to show these criminals that their crime will be taken serious, that we will cut them off from bermuda and from their families and for a long time – GUARANTEED!!!

Rob anyone and have another serious consequence.

so yes, people that hide and allow this crime to hqappen are at fault but get your heads out of your a$$e$ if you think that the govt (PLP or OBA) does not have the ability to fight back.

The PLP have been to lazy on this.

    • 1minute says:

The PLP were the ones that got rid of the death penalty…

      • Goose says:

It was an EU mandate that got rid of the death penalty, that filtered through the UK and down to us as an overseas territory. Can’t lay blame or credit at the feet of the PLP for striking the death penalty from the books.

      • Y-Gurl says:

The got rid of the money too

    • Ryan says:

      Finally, someone who understands.

  32. Aware says:

I wish yall would stop arguing about each others comment and do something the problem.

  33. Real Talk says:

I read in a comment how the families r benefitting from these street guys. Well “HELLO” so r the police and their families let’s keep it real. They bust a house get $10,000 of drug money but when the evidence goes to court there’s only $3000. So where’s the other $7000. O I know out buying flat screen tv , expensive jewelry n take their families on lavish trips. REAL TALK!!!!!

    • Plato says:

Truuuuu and also to explain how the system works, if there is no crime there is no overtime, there are less cops, less court cases, shorter court cases, and now they have enacted legislation to give the police power to steal the proceeds of crime, now whois the real GANG, and for all you lames who no nothing but theory EVERYONE is involved in the drug trade from top to bottom but as with any business retail is the most cutthroat…..

  34. Triangle Drifter says:

I’ll give it to the PLP faithful, the PLP soft on crime position is not the sole reason for crime levels but they sure are responsible for a good chunk of it starting way back with the infamous “go fornicate in the bushes” to produce voters for the PLP. That produced a whole generation of single parent or no parent children who are now having children.

Then there is the culture of “it takes a village to raise a child”. No it doesn’t. First & foremost it takes two RESPONSIBLE parents to raise a child. Once they are adults, & after 18 they are adults, they make their own choices. Bermuda has not had a decent Police Comissioner since Colin Coxal. Remember him? Alex Scott, PLP MP, offered him a ride to the airport to be rid of him. The soft on crime did not start under the PLP but they sure made their influence felt as opposition. The last layer of blame is the courts which hand out wrist slaps for serious crimes.

So, where do we go from here? Well, if NYC could be cleaned up so can Bermuda starting with zero tolerance for loitering. Make prison a miserable place again instead of some sort of right of passage where one does not have to do much of anything. Who is in charge at Westgate anyway, the prisoners or the guards?

  35. Sandgrownan says:

With all the practice they get, you’d think they’d be better shots by now.

    • Me says:

Well @Sandgrownan I’m very happy that they aren’t better shots because I preferred being able to actually talk to my family last night instead of starting to plan his funeral. *Stop the Violence*

      • Sandgrownan says:

Perhaps they need to make better choices?

      • New Norm says:

And during this talk with your family last night, did he tell you the truth about why he got shot? Did he tell you and the police who shot him and why? Certainly he knows these answers. Perhaps his family does too.

        • Me says:

Perhaps people should just stop assuming because contrary to popular believe not all young black males are gang members. Better choices like what riding and siting off in a neighborhood?? It’s sad that Bermuda has come to the point where you if you venture out of your own neighborhood you’re automatically a target. I’m the biggest advocate for a violence free Bermuda an trust me when it really hits home and happens to someone you love and care for these comments will irritate you as much as they do me. People on blogs hide behind computers and piece together the lives of people whom they’ve only read about in a 4 paragraph story. Last I checked there wasn’t a law against sitting on a bike in a neighborhood that wasn’t your own. Bermuda we as a people really need to do better.

  36. Truth says:

Simple truth but everyone is too caught up in his/her doing their own thing. Read 2 Timothy 3:1-5. These things you all speak of have long been foretold. Ecclesiastes 1:9 says “there’s nothing new under the sun” but read the whole verse. Don’t think that man has the answer for any of problems. Ecclesiastes 8:9 says “man had dominated man to his own injury”! So can the PLP or OBA solve these issues? Look at every single man made government and ask yourselves if any one of them has ever been able to provide for the needs of ALL of its citizens, black, white, etc. Man does NOT have the answer for every man and he never will.

  37. NewWorldOrder says:

@ Triangle Drifter: have you ever been to Westgate? Do you think OBA will stop the shootings? Be for real. When are you people going to realize this is not the “old BDA” that you grew up in and it never will be again. How is a police commissioner going to change anything? The police can’t be everywhere at all times.Three comissioners wouldn’t be able to stop this. Where are they going to strike next?… you know so much!

  38. 50cent says:

@F*ckery: Do yo have any solutions? or do you just talk a lot of s**t like most people who comment do? a#s!

  39. life in a blaze says:

the Madness is gonna get worst,,,as soon as they start playing Jinggle Bells on the radio it’s gonna be Black Friday on the Streets Every Day !

  40. US Observer in Pink Sand says:

Over 20 years ago I remember as a teenager I didn’t want to abide by my mother’s rules. She sent me packing to my father’s house located in Khyber Pass, Warwick. Although my father did what he could, it wasn’t truly wasn’t what I needed at the time. He was busy doing his own thing. So, I found myself walking down the hill and hanging out on the wall outside the post office, with nothing to do and wondering what to do next. Back then we didn’t have guns (that I know of) and was too afraid to even think about shooting another human no matter what the situation was. Long story short, two weeks later I woke up and realized there was more to life than just sitting on a wall or starting trouble. Why? My mother who loved and cared for me, care enough to come back to get me. She refused to let her son go down that dark road. I realized right then that not only did my mother love and care for me enough, but also the community (people who knew us) cared enough to contact her out of concern. It starts with the family and the community first. If they cared enough for me more than I cared for myself at the time, then I owed them and myself the respect and a chance to a better future. Every person involved with this type of behavior (as well as parents) have a choice every time the sun rises and sets. The Bermuda Govt or authorities in power do not hold the magic key this fixing this situation. It starts with the community. You have the ultimate power in saving and getting your community back to where it was. It can happen because it happened for me and others that I helped along the way. Bermuda – you have so much to be thankful for in the 21 sq miles of island you call home. It’s not going to be east but its time to take a stand…DO IT!!

  41. Truth is killin' me... says:

The more crime that hits the headlines the better it is for this present Government to deflect issues like missing money, overspends and the like. Right now all these shootings grab the headlines and take the heat off them. They don’t care about another shooting until it is their own. WAKE UP!

  42. Vote For Me says:

You parents need to get a grip little Jimmy is out there doing dumb sh#te and your on the news saying how nice he is. Your either in denial or blind. WAKE UP! Pay attention to little Jimmy’s friends he hangs around at an early age and nip it in the butt if he’s around undesirable’s.

  43. Familiar says:

Do I blame the PLP entirely for the rise in violence in Bermuda?

No, but I do blame them in part and the reason for this is that they have grown and perpetuate the mindset that feeds these crimes.

    Entitlement without effort.
Not being held accountable for one’s actions.

If people in the highest places can behave this way, and continue to hold office, and be voted back in to office, how can you blame others in the population from behaving with the same mindset.

Do I believe the OBA can fix the problem? No. But I do believe that they have a greater chance of leading by better example than the PLP would if they received another term in office.

Government’s responsibility to helping in this area is working towards creating a more extensive, better trained police force and giving our students a better educational environment, one that includes vocational options.

The community’s responsibility is to work towards the return to family values, self respect and holding ourselves, our friends, and our family members accountable for their actions.

And to speak up. People know who are committing these crimes and are staying silent.

Government can only do some things, the rest is up to us.

  44. Prayerful says:

Well, two men on a bike again! I don’t think that the shooters want to kill anybody, they are just shooting for the fun of it.

  45. Jai says:

I don’t care to comment any longer it is all too sad for me.

  47. Duh says:

I think we need metal detectors at highschools now! Just a thought

    • Terry says:

      Bullsht.
You need the children to tell the Police that there is a gun in the house.
Plus if you believe it so than you know more than most.
The Gangs have recruited children to shoot their peers?

Speak up or ‘never hold the piece’.
      Shalom.

  48. Trouble In Paradise says:

Get rid of theses useless politicians and let’s invite Castro or Shavez here to straighten out this country…

  51. Withheld says:

God bless no stray bullets hurt anyone living in the area, the houses are pretty close together. Never thought it would happen in an area that is generally pretty quiet.

    • Terry says:

Houses being pretty close have nothing to do with it. Your talking crap.
Where you live. Paget Island with an aparment near Kyber.?

  53. SoFar Bye says:

In the news tonight the news reader said these ones were shot and injured, can someone explain how this to me, where they then fell off something to get injured? I need to know I might be up all night trying to figure this out! Help me.

  54. crying shame says:

You people on these blogs are funny on here really blaming the government for something that should have been taught at home. It’s a basic lack of respect for human life and authority. Paula Cox doesn’t live in these gangsters homes she can’t control what they do. I ‘m sick of people throwing blame at everyone else thse children and parents need to take responsibility for themselves and just do better.

  55. oh my durr says:

this is terrible news i hope the victims are ok. i hope the assailants get caught and go to jail the only downside to that is when released theyll probly join plp and run for government.

  56. STFU ALREADY says:

All you fu*k faces are telling lies cause it was only 6 shots and I know for a fact. Bermuda has so much pokey a*s people. You lot don’t know f*cks but yet it’s all these different stories. If you don’t know f*cks STFU. K thanks.

And this is why I wanna get off this island. All these shooters wanna be like 3 hunna aink going happen. Won’t last a hour in these different countries. #BangBang thats what these boys go by now days.
