6-15 Years: Trio Sentenced In $1M Heroin Case

December 12, 2012

Craig Hatherley [28] David Carroll [32] and Lorenzo Lottimore [34] were sentenced today [Dec 12] to between 6 – 15 years after being convicted in a $1 million heroin case.

They had been found guilty of conspiring to import almost $1 million worth of heroin via a US Airways flight bound for Bermuda on June 2011. An American baggage handler who worked at the Philadelphia International Airport, was arrested in connection with the scheme, confessed to the scheme and agreed to work with the U.S. authorities which resulted in the arrest of the Bermudian conspirators.

At today’s sentencing, Justice Charles-Etta Simmons handed down a prison sentence of six years for Mr Carroll who had pleaded guilty to two counts before the trial. The Crown had suggested a sentence in the range of 5 to 7 years, and Mr Carroll was also required to forfeit $10,000.

The Crown suggested that both Mr Hatherley and Mr Lottimore should get sentences in the range 18 to 20 years, and Mr Hatherley was sentenced to 12 years while Mr Lottimore received 15 years.

Lorenzo Lottimore was previously charged in connection with the airport security incident in 2010 that saw two planes grounded, and airport services suspended while authorities conducted extensive security searches. He was charged with two counts of breaching airport security, and plead guilty to both at that time.

Back in 2010, Airport Security officers had found Mr Lottimore exiting a plane using a folding ladder, and in that court case he claimed he had entered the aircraft in order to get into the cockpit and study the aircraft’s systems.

    • Back to Life, Back to Reality says:

      @stfu
He should be ashamed to have brought such shame to his familys name. I appreciate that his family loves him unconditionally but if he is happy on a day like today then something is really wrong him.

As the sibling of someone that is addicted to heroin I have no sympathy for him and would love for him to suffer as long as my family has – because of drug pushers like him.

My deepest sympathies to his family – but you must undersatnd why people hate to see those that are being punished – SMILE!

      • G says:

Nobody told your sibling take herion pretty sure the dealer didn’t force him to take it so stfu!! #dumb#$% no one gives a f_$%

        • Back to Life, Back to Reality says:

You are right he was a grown man who made his own choices in life and is paying for it. However, his dealers prey upon his weaknesess. He has lost his family, home, job and has a horrible attitude, kind of like you!? Im pretty sure wit an attitude like that you are either a drug dealer or a drug user. Keep pushing, keep using – your time is limited “G”

Looking forward to seeing you on the front pages of the paper too!

If these were your friends and my comments (which I do not believe were disrespectful) offended you, I’m sorry – actually after your childish rant – I’m not really. When you visit them – be nice, say high and take them a gift – soap on a rope.

          • thinks that make you go hmmm says:

pretty sure that if there was no heroin in the world, your sibling would have found something else to become addicted to or hooked on…drug addiction is just that, an addiction…and there are many types of addictions. You can become dangerously addicted to things that aren’t illegal and that they sell in your local grocery store. The drug use is a symptom of the actual problem, hate to break it to ya. Oh ya, not to mention that the drugs will still get into Bermuda, even though they have locked these guys up, guaranteed they will make it here. NEWSFLASH: The drug war is a joke. How long have they been fighting it? And they are still here and will always be.

  4. SMH :) says:

Dont they look real happy to be going to jail???? Really, look at them. Rather be in the out, at least we are able to eat and sleep when we want to. Maybe aceboy can get his hair did by the one with the bent wrist. im just saying

  5. Concerned says:

I take it that you have not had anyone holding you by the arm as the officer is doing so allowing the wrist to bend. I would rather see the wrist bent than up in gang signs.

you should be telling the guys on the streets to pull their danged pants up and hand out belts on Church Street and tellign them where the fashion comes from being you know the meaning of a bent wrist and how things happen in prison.

  6. fidel says:

  11. Real Talk (original) says:

SMDH. DO you really think anybody would be smiling after being handed down a 15 year sentence?

It’s pretty obvious to anybody with an ounce of objectivity that they are smiling at family members who they may not have seen for months.

  12. ThaGreatMJ says:

  17. margaret says:

What purpose does it serve, to name-call, insinuate and ridicule? They’ve been found guilty and must pay the price of a jail term. Let’s instead hope that they serve their time in a humble manner, and return to society rehabilitated. I don’t know the other men, but I do know that Craig comes from a nice, hard-working family. I’m deeply saddened for them.

    • 2012 says:

@margaret, the people who insinuate and ridicule are the people who live under rocks or with their heads in the sand, and really have no clue to the way the world works. they are the people that believe everything they hear, see and read in the news, and never question any of it, just take it as fact. they are called ignorant people. those people are the ones I truly feel sorry for because they contribute to the social ills that go on in society today!

  18. RB Striving says:

I remember when this Case Started, ever since I’ve been paying attention to it. Whats wrong with this picture???…. a repeat of the same thing, more young man off to jail. Is it just me or is it really like all you see is another black man going to jail. Now let me throw out that this is nothing to do with racism just making it known because i know how people could get, now that is understood i will continue. This has been a serious case and now reflecting back on everything that took place during this whole thing, I picked up on some things. Here it is You have two young man facing a Major Charge and time in jail, the members of the court and then THE FAMILY FRIENDS AND LOVE ONES.
I have read all the comments prior to mine, and it is obvious that us people are hurt, hurt about this and I”m sure by other Cases too. Everybody feels something , everybody, it may not seem as clear but we’re all in this together. What that means to me is, we all have to work with each other, we are only as strong as our weakest link. I know its challenging times which is even more a reason to work together.
What i liked in regards to this case was how despite the Challenging duration for the family of the accused. They Stood strong regardless of what happen, I could imagine it wasn’t easy watching it all transpire. I can see that it was appreciated when the accused smiled, I’m sure hes not happy to be going jail but is happy to see his family support him despite what he is going up for. SUPPORT is very very important , we all want to feel supported . Sometimes it may not be easy but when your turn comes you would be glad it was there.

To all the main people attach (family, friends, love ones, accused and the Victims on drugs) Keep Your Head Up and to Bermuda I LOVE YOU .Lets Stay Strong for each other

  19. Kathy says:

You should hang your head in shame for the trouble you have put your family through. How dare he smile like a rock star! Shame on you and I hope within the next 15 years you can find the courage to change the person you have become and you can apologise to your loving family who stood by you.

Disgusted in general with the attitudes of Bermuda’s young men!

  20. Judge & Jury says:

I would smile too. The Parole Board would give Hatherley 4 years and Lottimore 5 years only to do at Westgate.

  21. real talk says:

All u #$%^&, they are smiling cause $1M worth of herion should carry a 25 year sentence, instead they got 15 and 12 they’ll be out in about 5 to 6 years. That’s a slap on d wrist.. Think b4 u assume all type of dumbs$*t.

  22. The First Real Talk says:

He is smiling at his family who he hasn’t seen in months you dumb a#s ignorant people. People like you are whats wrong with the world speaking on sh$% you have no clue about, you see a picture that captures one moment and make all sorts of assumptions. What you get in trouble for something you did wrong and you never smile again?!?!? lets be real think before you say dumb sh$% please. How could you wish such nasty things on someone you don’t even know. You people should be ashamed of sh$% you say.

  23. Keep your head up says:

KEEP YA HEADS UP RENZ & TUDDY! People will listen to and read the news, and come up with their own conclusions about you guys, and think they know you. But those people don’t matter, and you will never need them in life. You will always have the love and support of your family members and friends, trust and believe. This one bad thing cannot outweigh all the goods things we know and love about you, so use those small minded people and these stumbling blocks as stepping stones. Only God can judge you.

  24. come on people!! says:

    Honestly people.

They bought in $1m worth of heroin!! he shows no remorse thats the sad part. Do you know how many lives are ruined becuase of drugs in this island. They should be ashamed and nobody said his family should’nt love him however this should be an embarrassment to them as well. I get tired of these cowards selling drugs because they can’t do what normal citizens do and work and earn a honest living.

They should have gotten longer!! What’s the difference between them and a muderer?? Not much!!!

  25. Where do I "BUY BDA" says:

The guy with the short hair cut has a facial expression that looks like he about to cry like a baby and is saying….. “Mommy… don’t let them take me away. I did’nt mean to do it”.

I bet you won’t do it again Huh!!!

  26. jim brown says:

  27. (0.0) says:

Another 3 bites the dust! No wonder why girls are going with girls now days. Our young men are dropping like flies! (Off topic I know!)

  28. ReBermuda says:

it’s hard because conspiracy only has to be proven that you knew something of the fact before after or during.
