The Corporation of Hamilton recently announced a number of parking changes are planned for Hamilton including cost reductions in some cases, introducing parking fees in new areas, as well as “aggressive” clamping of cars parked in spaces designated for residents.
A Government spokesperson said, “The Minister of Home Affairs, Senator The Hon. Michael M. Fahy, JP met this afternoon with the Mayor of Hamilton, The Wor. Graeme Outerbridge, JP and the Corporation CEO, Ed Benevides, JP to discuss the Government’s concerns with the proposed Hamilton Traffic and Parking Ordinance 2013.
“It has been agreed that Corporation representatives will meet in short order with the Attorney General’s representatives to examine the Ordinance prior to it becoming effective. The public shall be updated in due course.”

Show me the evidence……………….bawahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Render unto Cesar what’s Cesar’s. LMAO
Good because Hamilton is not a user friendly city. Shopping online is gonna increase.
How will cycle owners pay and display in Hamilton ?
Pay online and the warden will scan your plate and tell if you have credit or not. Sounds fun doesn’t it. NOT. Something pretty close to that anyway from what I have been told. There will be not getting around paying to park in Hamilton. I hope they can block them form doing it though…
The media did not pick up on the fact that the draft ordinance in yesterday’s paper opened the door to parking fees for auxiliary cycles and motor cycles.
It’s funny how the Corporation objects to every building project in Hamilton that wants to include underground parking … wonder why?
Try the water table for one Charter.
Plus sewage, and all lines.
That’s not it Terry. They would still cut into those same lines when digging the foundation for any of these new projects. Regarding the water table, while that is a concern, its not impossible to deal with. The new Swan building has it. The XL building also has two levels of underground parking and there are others. They are both close to being at water level as any place in Hamilton. Of course as you get up to the Reid Street and Church Street areas it really shouldn’t be an issue at all.,
Ahhhhh….bit late to express concerns you think!
The zombies are coming….they are wearing blue shirts.
Good news for the drivers that angrily “fly” into their free parking spots each morning at 5:30am,
you can all now sleep in later!
Lets hope they don’t clamp Santa’s sleigh. He’s got to get to Somerset and its a long walk with all those presents.
So why are they going to start charging for bikes to park? And how would they implement that? Stick on tickets like the ones for cars, so the next person can steal them? Or the electronic parking meter that yet again could get stolen…. Guess they’re trying to push more people to use public transport but why? When we already had to pay an extra couple of thousand dollars for vehicles that are over priced compared to manufacturing costs…
Can anyone confirm the legality of clamping in Bermuda?
Am I being simplistic by thinking that if you put something on my car/bike/truck that it belongs to me?
It’s a gift, if they (COH and SafeGuard) can clamp me and not pay for damages to my vehicle then I must not be liable for damages to their clamp?
the corporation of Hamilton is acting incrediblely ignorant. in these economic times they should be encouracing the public to shop in Hamilton and they are chasing the public away. The city is an absolute mess, its discusting, roads, trash, gardens, vagrants, the list goes on. get your act together, you claim to be the capitol of our country. put the vote back to the merchants, put back the previous administration, these jokers cant run anything…
I think it is time for the mayor and his deputy to resign , they will go down in history as the biggest ******* in the COH….
Mayor Gosling we miss you !!!!!
I had hope for them, but I have to say, they have been incredibly good at alienating themselves and making it UNATTRACTIVE and UNIVITING for many to shop in Hamilton.
I am going to Colombia to the Conference of Mayors!
Jokers…the lot of them…especially that puppet on the news explaining why it sort of had to be done…infrastructure blah, blah, blah. If these fools had managed their finances better we wouldn’t be in this predicament. COLOMBIA…GIVE ME A BREAK…THE PUBLIC AREN’T FOOLS!!! C of H are a bunch of WASTERS!!!!!!!
What infrastructure? Didn’t they sell out the people of Bermuda by handing over the lease to the City of Hamilton waterfront ? MMs city now isn’t it???…make him f’n pay!!!!
Good news!!
The proposed Municipalities amendment that will be debated on Friday allows the Minister to override any Municipality Ordinances. Let’s hope Minister Fahy exercises his new powers before October and gets the Corporation to rescind these changes.
Isn’t the Corporation happy abut getting wharfage back. Not as much as last time but they will at least get wharfage from the container ships!!
Clamp my Car…I’ll cut it off in front of the clampers.
Clamp my Bike,I’ll do the same thing.
ANOTHER REASON NOT TO GO INTO HAMILTON. ANOTHER REASON TO SHOP ONLINE. CLAMP MY CAR- WHEN DID THE C OF H BECOME SO MEAN SPIRITED.
When they started taking trips to Columbia.
The COH probably made the decision to implement parking fees throughout the City after having their main source of revenue (wharfage fees) taken away from them by the former Government, but before hearing that the new Government is proposing to give them back their wharfage fees. It was totally unrealistic to expect the Corporation to maintain the City streets etc without having a solid source of income.
Surely now is a good time to review their decision, and they also need to realize that anything that brings extra revenue needs prior approval from Government. Let’s hope that reason, and sensible advice from the new Government will prevail.
Get informed!
Giving back wharfage of $3million, but removing $5million subsidy. The City is now 2million short. Mark my words, the City of Hamilton has now become another branch of government, thanks to the OBA. Watch how it now falls into further disrepair. Never expected this from the OBA government!
PLP’ers must be laughing as the OBA did what some PLP’ers wanted, but could not do! They’re just waiting to get back in!
Unintended consequences.
If money is that tight makes you wonder where they got the idea it was ok for a bunch of them to go to Columbia.
I dont buy bermuda any way..what makes you think i will do it now
Remember your incredibly ignorant and selfish statement the next time you or someone you know is looking for support from local businesses to sponsor your kids team, pay for the medical expenses of someone you know, or donate to your kids school raffle, or sponsor the next concert you go to, or donate a prize for your local church Bingo, or radio contest, or meals for school kids and the homeless and so on. You think Amazon or Ebay or any online US store you shop from will ever invest in your community. Go ahead , don’t buy BDA , we will all suffer. I just hope that you or someone you know that works in retail does not suffer and loose their job because of narrow minded idiots like you!
@gone Gates, I totally agree with your statement, to save a few dollars people would sacrifice thier country and their friends .
Everybody wants a free ride!
Now government overreach…! Hope overreach doesn’t comeback to hunt us if government changes.
Not a smart move!
Why doesn’t the CoH enforce the present parking especially around Park Road and Victoria Park. Signs state 1 Hour yet cars are parked all day and not ticketed.
You would make more $$ enforcing the parking than extending it’s reach.
It would be nice if they collected outstanding parking ticket fines. How many hundreds of thousands of dollars of unpaid fines are there?
People will either pay the new fees or not. I suspect they will pay. Bermuda’s parking fees are very very low. Just go to any city in the USA and check their parking rates. I paid $32 for a day in Boston. Bermudians need to stop moaning. If you don’t want to pay, then don’t take your car to town. Or even better, park at Bullswood and walk.
Trips to Columibia are expensive. The COH has to pay for them somehow. Oh…and the Santa Clus Parade too.
My parade is a privately funded event put on by my sponsors at Market Place. CoH should charge for the cleanup of the mess that all you “Good” people leave behind!
Park at Bulls Head and waddle to my office located close to Supermart on Front Street, then waddle back to BH at the end of the day? Yeah right…. Come on CoH, you should have special parking rates at ALL your car parks for folks with extra needs.
Pregnant lady – Good news! They already do. Once you are in your third trimester, you can get a form from CoH. Get your doctor to sign off, and you receive a 3 month “disabled” parking pass from CoH so you can park in those parking spaces. Hope that helps with all the walking!
never paid, never will
The current ‘crew’ at the CoH have previously shown an Anti-Seniors approach–and here they go AGAIN!! Most Seniors are not ‘disabled’, but for health reasons cannot reasonably be expected to park at Bulls Head-then struggle all the way to the shopping areas in Hamilton–then struggle BACK to Bulls Head-now ADDITIONALLY CARRYING their purchased goods! It’s NOT a choice! Many Seniors NEED a car to shop! No doubt this new CoH ‘initiative’ will lead to further health problems(pulled muscles, asthma, falls + even heart attacks or worse)for Seniors!! Minister Fahy+AG’s Chambers, PLEASE reign in this current crew of CoH!! It’s not only the City’s retailers+jobs that will suffer, but the health + very lives of Seniors are depending upon you!!
WOW everyone is feeling the pinch and the Corporation wants to levy parking fees through out the City. That will put more burden on peoples pocket. May I suggest that if they want to increase revenue, why don’t they offer free parking during certain hours and those who have to come into town outside of them hours pay. Another agenda item which has been a long time issue is the squatters and beggars on our City streets. People who work and purchase goods in the City shouldn’t have to be subjected to the constant begging or being followed up and down by these people. Bermuda is small and they are the next first thing our tourist see after arriving by sea or air.
