Progress Report Since Joint Ministerial Council
The UK Government’s website has just posted progress reports for all the inhabited British Overseas Territories, showing the progress made since last year’s Joint Ministerial Council.
The report about Bermuda, which is dated November 2013, covers tackling discrimination, conscription, the Marine EEZ, the lionfish problem, crime, disaster preparation, health care, education and more.
On the topic of taxes, the report says: “Bermuda is committed to being a global leader in supporting international cooperation in tax matters and seeks UK recognition and support in doing so.
“The Government of Bermuda rejects absolutely any reference to Bermuda as a ‘tax haven’. Bermuda’s consumption based tax policy, which has been in place since the 19th Century, is in line with its foreign trade partners.”
On the Marine EEZ, the report says: “This project will likely result in a significant area of our EEZ designated as a no-take zone.
“The true value of such a designation will be in the establishment and effective management of a monitoring and compliance regime to ensure non-compliance is discouraged and or sanctioned.”
