CARIFTA Swimmers Win 2 Golds & 2 Silvers

Bermuda’s swimmers had an excellent opening day at the 2014 CARIFTA Swimming Championships in Aruba, capturing four medals, two of which were gold, and setting one new CARIFTA record.

Both Emma Harvey and Jesse Washington won gold medals, while Harvey added another silver, as did the girls relay team.

Emma Harvey won gold in the 50m backstroke, with her time of 31.93 setting new Bermuda and CARIFTA age-group records, breaking her own records set in the morning’s preliminaries.

The 12-year-old Warwick Academy student then added a silver in 100 butterfly, while 14-year-old Jesse Washington won the gold medal in the 100m butterfly in a time of 58.77.

Bermuda then captured a silver in the girls 11/12 400m relay; with Emma Harvey, Isabelle Dutranoit, Alyssa Paynter and Ashley Irby finishing in a time of 4:22.93.

Also in action during last night’s finals was Shannon Hassell who placed 4th in the 50m backstroke, while Ethan Daley finished 7th in the 100m butterfly. Bermuda was also represented in the 400m freestyle relay, with Alex Pilgrim, Keagan Woolley, Jude Moseley and Ethan Daley finishing 7th in time of 4:28.22.

Bermuda’s 14-strong swimming team consists of Shannon Hassell, Madelyn Moore, Ashley Irby, Philip Hagen, Jesse Washington, Emma Harvey, Alex Pilgrim, Alyssa Paynter, Keagan Wooley, Brett Smith, Nicholas Brando, Jude Moseley, Ethan Daley and Isabelle Dutranoit.
