Opposition Leader’s Father’s Day Message

June 15, 2014

[Written by Opposition Leader Marc Bean]

This Sunday, across the island, many Bermudians will gather in celebration of the fathers in their lives.

What is it that makes a good father? It would be arrogant of me to claim that I have the perfect formula. However, I do have a living example that has given me guideposts to follow along the road of life.

Thank you, Daddy.

When my mother passed away, my father Allan Bean Sr. stepped up and served as both father and mother. While he had the love and support of our family and our community, he still had to be the one who was there to lay down the law to demand excellence and achievement from his children.

He taught us the importance of integrity, being forthright, keeping our word, doing for self and each other. He taught us to love and respect ourselves and, most of all, to respect others.

These lessons have remained with me always. We may not have always stayed on the path our father laid out for us, yet because of him, we knew how to find our way back to where we should be. I have fully embraced his values of honesty, integrity, hard work, and love of family.

My family is blessed to have had our father in our lives and for the contribution he has made to who each of us are today.

Love your Dads. To those who have a father in their lives, I encourage you to celebrate them and be thankful for them every day. This may be expressed by speaking with them about life as they grew up, attending social events with them, ensuring that they have proper medical check ups, and continuing to seek their advice.

I encourage all the fathers of Bermuda to continue to do the following for our children of Bermuda;

  • Be a part of your children’s lives on a daily basis, whether they live with you or not
  • Attend their PTA meetings, and keep in touch with their teachers
  • Establish a university savings plan for their future academic endeavors
  • Speak with your children, not solely speak to them
  • Teach them the power of saving money, versus simply giving them money to spend
  • Teach and treat our daughters that we are their first love, above all other men
  • Nurture their spiritual values

Double Duty

To the mothers that have to double their role of Father as well, we salute you on this day. Regardless of the circumstance of why you have to play the role, you do so with strength, dignity and pride. As your children develop and grow, you will see the abundance of rewards for your multiple sacrifices.

Finally to my children Shaehlay, Janhoi and Llana, I thank you for helping me to remain focused on our goals to ensure a solid future for you and all other Bermudian children . Every day I thank our heavenly father for entrusting me with guiding and protecting the three of you.

I may falter at times, yet in my faltering, I have gained knowledge of how to be a better example to you all. Thank you for your continued support Bermuda, Thank you, and may each of you have a happy Father’s Day.

Just one comment, for years I have been a single(female) parent and on father’s day I receive congratulatory remarks such as you have mde Mr. Bean, “you have been a good mother AND father. I could never be a good father, I have not been biologically equipped, but I can be the best mother that I can be.

I do not see or hear of people giving mother’s greetings to single fathers on mother’s day.

    I wonder why!
