Video: St George’s ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

September 5, 2014

Mayor of St. George’s Garth Rothwell was joined by Deputy Mayor Alderman Quinell Francis and Alderman Anthony Richardson this afternoon [Sept 5] after being nominated to take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

The three Corporation of St. George’s members took the challenge while “locked” in the stocks in King Square. Three buckets were filled with water and two large bags of ice spread amongst them. Volunteers were asked to dunk the Mayor and Deputy, while the Deputy Mayor took the opportunity to dunk Mr Richardson.

The Ice Bucket Challenge phenomenon has swept the internet in the past few weeks, and Bermuda residents who have taken part include the GovernorBF&M employees, BF&M CEO John Wight, Saltus staff and some of the island’s Roman Catholic Priests.

The ALS Challenge sees those who have been tagged or challenged by participants record a video of themselves pouring a bucket with icy cold water over their head or have someone else do it for them and donate to an ALS charity of their choice.

This is done to promote awareness of the disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [ALS] or Lou Gehrig’s disease while at the same time encouraging more people to donate to its research cause.

smdh—some people love plantation… When will the ALS challenge end, yet again people have died as a result of doing this icebucket challenge and we are still acting like its a party…. yeah just call me the party pooper! but its getting ridiculous to see that people are actually suppose to take the challenge if they are not donating and some have decided to donate and take the bucket and we ignore the facts that the money used to research a supposedly incurable disease has already caused the death of persons attempting to save a life.. Does anyone not understand that there have been lives taken, trying to save lives??????when is enough $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$enough$$$$$$.Pouring ice over ones body should be rated R…

There was a patient in our kemh ccu for many many years suffering from the disease , lived there for rest of his life and recently passed away.. Luke Caines also has been suffering from a disease for most of his life (incurable) will someone donate some of these funds to help sustain the rest of his life…research has become a word used to raise money however little information on how the research is done if already determination has been made to be incurable…I have seen people suffer , taken care of them and most of the time funds raised for research do not go towards these persons who are actually living through their dis-ease..The people that need the most assistance in this world should be the ones to be helped immediately, that is fairness and justice imo…It is a real situation outside of the “challlenge” that people would prefer to ignore, volunteers are needed right here in Bermuda as well as extra workers in the health/medical field..I hope we will consider educating our children as to how they can better assist their own society by pursuing careers in the health field!Hands On, holistic, and surgeons..

There is a segment of Bermuda’s resident population who are sufferers of the monkey see, monkey do,the blind leading the blind, follow the crowd syndrome, and as a result they fail to consider consequences following certain actions. There is no truth to this saying: What you don’t know won’t hurt you, because what you don’t know can KILL you. The ice-bucket challenge has claimed lives elsewhere and it is just a matter of time before the same occurs here should this practice continue. Memory serves me right, many years ago, some of you readers may recall, a young male jogger, after a good run, took the plunge into the frigid waters off one of those beaches on South Shore and lost his life (I believe he suffered a heart attack) due to the sudden introduction/exposure of his heated body and cold water.

To those gullible bald heads who engaged in that foolishness: In case you don’t know, your bald heads usually lose moisture and heat excessively without an ice-cube/water baptism. If you can, just imagine the explosive shock/trauma you inflicted upon your entire physiological system by subjecting your naked heads to a sudden downpour of ice-water and battering ice-cubes. Yours was an exercise in self endangerment.

To individuals and organizations, just don your thinking caps. There are countless, safe and innovative ways in which you can raise needed funds for your causes.

How much money did they donate?

First of all, no one has died from the ALS challenge from the result of hypothermia or anything like that. People have been injured while trying to take the challenge to a next level of stupidity though. I’ve seen people dump big trash cans on top of people heads and wheel barrels. You can YouTube ALS bloopers to see the funny side of it. All that to say, I’m sure some people have been injured but only from being extreme!
