BEC Introduces New Educator Credentials

The Bermuda Educators Council [BEC], in partnership with the Inspire Institute for Math & Science, is launching two professional credentials for educators who support mathematics learning and those who lead it across Bermuda.

A spokesperson said, “Beginning November 10, the programmes will connect professional learning with practice in classrooms and schools, helping participants strengthen their work and demonstrate what changes for learners.”

“At the Bermuda Educators Council [BEC], we believe that investing in educators is investing in Bermuda’s future. When we strengthen our teachers’ and school leaders’ expertise and confidence, we elevate the quality of education our children receive,” said Tamicia Darrell, Chairperson of the Bermuda Educators Council.

“This investment reflects what the BEC stands for: elevating the profession, empowering both private and public school educators, and ensuring that when our teachers grow, Bermuda’s students thrive.”

A spokesperson added, “The High-Impact Mathematics Support Practice Credential is designed for paraeducators, interventionists, tutors and support teachers working with learners individually and in small groups. Participants will strengthen their ability to understand learners’ mathematics thinking, respond to their needs, build confidence and independence, and demonstrate the impact of their support.

“The High-Impact Mathematics Leadership Practice Credential serves teacher leaders and principals. Participants will examine mathematics teaching and learning in their settings, identify opportunities for change, and develop approaches that strengthen educators’ practice and learners’ experiences.”

“A ‘grow your own’ approach recognises the talent already working in our schools and communities and invests in its development,” said Dr. Lou Matthews, founder of InspireMath. “These credentials connect evidence-based practices with the judgment educators need in real classrooms. Participants will apply what they learn, examine what changes for learners, and build evidence of their impact. For Bermuda, this is an investment in our own people and the capacity we can sustain together.”

A spokesperson added, “Both information credentials combine a fall foundation with a spring component in which participants apply their learning and build evidence of impact. Each full credential comprises 30 learning hours, including live sessions and applied work in participants’ own settings.

“The fall programme includes six live, 90-minute virtual sessions on November 10, 12, 19 and 24, and December 3 and 10. The support cohort meets from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m., followed by leadership from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., Bermuda time.

“Participants who successfully complete both parts of the programme will earn an Institute credential recognising their demonstrated practice and impact in mathematics education.

“Established in 2024 by Bermudian educator Dr. Lou Matthews, the Inspire Institute for Math & Science is based in Washington, D.C., and accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges [WASC]. The Institute offers professional learning and credentialing pathways for practising educators, connecting research-informed practice with application in schools and evidence of impact on teaching and learning.

“Initial registration interest in the leadership cohort has been strong. Registration remains open for the mathematics support cohort, and the BEC encourages eligible educators to express their interest. For registration details, contact the BEC office at educators@logic.bm.”
