Governor Accepts ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

August 22, 2014

The global ice bucket craze for charity, which sees individuals submitting to a sudden drenching of ice cold water, has reached Government House.

The Ice Bucket Challenge, as it is known, has swept social media in its effort to raise money towards the research of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [ALS] over the past month, helping to generate more than $50 million for the cause, according to the ALS Association [ALSA].

Governor George Fergusson submitted to the challenge today in the Government House garden to raise awareness and funding for ALS, commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, responding to a challenge by Premier Michael Dunkley and following thousands of others before him.

Governor Ferguson revealed a personal connection to the cause just prior to being soaked with water by Government House gardener Mark Anthony Swan and Ann Smith Gordon of PALS.

“The Premier has kindly nominated me for a dunking – for a good cause,” he said. “I have friends who have died from Motor Neurone Disease, and am very happy indeed to make a contribution to research on ALS, which is a form of Motor Neurone Disease.

“But I thought it would be right also to make a contribution to a charity in Bermuda, so I have asked Ann Smith Gordon of PALS to do the actual pouring. It’s a variation on the good, kind and charitable activity that she normally does, but will earn PALS a contribution.”

“She will be helped by Mark Anthony Swan, who usually waters the Government House garden, not the Governor.

“I will be nominating three other potential “victims”. They will be delighted to get emails from me later today.”

  5. somuchless says:

They really made sure that bucket had ice. Brrrrrr

    • Build a Better Bermuda says:

The ice wouldn’t really be that cold, it’s contact would be brief and minimal; it’s the water the ice was sitting in that would be the worst.

  6. Noel Ashford says:

OMG…. I want to nominate those 3 !!!! HAHAHAH Koodos to the governor! Great job.

  7. Ringmaster says:

I am sure that Chris Furbert ….La verne Furbert ….and Marc Bean ….would have no problem with being iced because they have been iced from getting any( Quodos from Truth is killing me….Noel Ashford )and their ilk from day one for standing up for Freedom Justice and Equality in these Bermuda islands for the Working Class….!No problem whatsoever …..bring it…!Stellar Warrior’s for the Working Class of People….!

    • Ringmaster says:

In that case they should all volunteer to take the challenge and raise money for charity.

    • MR. Wisdom says:

How are you so stupid to talk about freedom justice and equality in one breath and then the other breath support conscription that violates all three?

    • LaVerne Furbert says:

Thank you Takbir Karriem Sharrieff. I don’t think it’s necessary for me to inform the media whenever I contribute to charity. And you’re right, Chris Furbert, Marc Bean, and I (and a few others) get doused with venom on a daily basis from the likes of “Truth is killing me” and Noel Ashford. “And still I rise!”

  11. We Are Not Amused! says:

I would gladly pay good hard earned $$$’s to see any of these

getting a bucket of ice over them, might just cool them off.

  12. mj says:

I have never heard of amyotropic lateral sclerosis, I would like to know more about what it is, how it came about, how many people it affects in Bermuda and also its potential threat to the masses… Photo optsand dropping names tends to detract from the subject.. There has been billions of dollars given to cancer research and we’ve never had an update yet!!!!but money continues to roll in that direction without accountability… I would like to know more about these new words they come up with to discribe a certain condition of the body, our largest organ! The governor is not impressive taking a cold bucket of ice in this Bermuda heat. plz.. just tell us more information about who, what where when why and how of the situation.
